Help! Card selection?

PostSat Sep 23, 2023 10:19 am

Player Set: All-Time Greats 9 1980-2019

Playing in a friendly 24 team league. This is all I know about league at this point. Never played this set. We have a one round player card selection before random draft then serpentine back with ballpark. I have the first player card selection from set. Which player should I select? Thanks (in advance) for the input.

I think the answer comes down to the type of team you’re building and the salary cap you are using.

From 80-2019 one of the Barry Bonds cards would be the best hitter available, and Greg Maddox would have the top priced pitching card. But if it’s 80m spending 12m+ on either might not be ideal. Also are all stadiums available or is it just those that fall in that time frame?

The good thing is there’s enough cards to make most strategies work. My favorite card during this time frame is the 2019 Yelich. Which would work with any lefty leaning power park or a even split park. A few others I’d consider (both over 10m) are the 2018 mike trout (2 injury but might be the best cf card) and 2000 Pedro if you want to go pitching first

If the salary cap is $120 million or above, Bonds is a no-brainer.
Bonds can still work at a lower cap, but requires a bigger commitment. With a lower cap, there are many viable strategies and it depends what type of team you want to build.

Take Bonds. Your set is limited. There are strategies out there for unlimited sets but with a limited set and 24 teams you aren’t debating whether to have a 17m bonds or 2 8m players. You are going to run out of quality in a hurry. The strategy of taking a lesser player here is OK with the full ATG9 set but it’s far different with the limitations you are going to have. You aren’t going to have much trouble being under the cap, even at 80m (and if you run into any you can still use a cheaper bonds).
