Platooning is not consistent. Game 126 of the tournament (I'm out of contention) and I'm not changing the platoon settings. No one on my team is injured. The lefty pitcher on my opponent gives up 5 in the first and gets replaced by a righty. I have 4 players set to platoon. In this game, 2 get platooned out (LF and C). 2 do not get platooned out (CF and RF); however, the CF does get removed late for a defensive replacement. The platoon player in RF stays on the bench the whole game.
gritch brought up the possibility of HAL wanting to keep an emergency reserve in case of injury. If that is the rule, it is not straightforward since the unused reserves were a CF and a CF,RF, so at least CF should have been platooned. Also, the CF came up before the LF, so there were plenty of reserves on the bench when the CF should have been platooned. And the CF who is platooned v Lefty is exceptionally bad vs righty and is a bad fielder - so a rational manager would have prioritized getting him out of the lineup and, as I said, he was up in front of the LF who was removed for a platoon. Also, the at the time that the LF was removed for his platoon mate, the platoon mate was the only available LF - so if HAL is keeping an emergency reserve in case of injury it is a really weird and complex algorithm.
Several years ago, I thought SOM fixed the problem with platooning by following the platoon rules 100% of the time. But recently I have been having a lot of problems getting HAL to follow my platoon instructions.
