Is there a 100 Win (give or take) curse in the game?

Just to clarify:
All the owners I know who are firm believers in the 100+ win curse, also meet the criteria stated early:

it is also their belief that there are modifiers being used, and that they are only being implemented with that very select criteria.
So if you as an owner, have not had a huge number of teams, and don't have a high season and playoff winning %, then no worries, the modifier will not be brought into play and your teams will not be affected.

Believing that you can negate the premise by "well it didn't happen to me..."--then strong chance that your manager stats don't fit the bill.

Does STRAT use modifiers? yes. If you question this, search TREYOMO's thread about the Homerun "normalizer"--Treyomo had noticed that there was an on-going big HR drop off with teams/players that had huge first half season results. So he created a league to test the result.
he created a league where every team had terrible cheap pitching staffs, huge power in the lineups, tons of BP HRs, and all playing in power parks......and every team had the same significant drop off of HRs in the 2nd half of the season.

Also, check out NEVDULLY's (the winningist owner in STRAT) post about this issue---his 100+ win teams have a record of something like 1-28.
and there are others just like that.

Nevdully has an incredible 32% championship rate with his playoff teams I think we would all sign up for that in a heartbeat.

This record has been brought up a lot. Who are the others?

Surely Nevdully had more than 29 100-win teams -- he had 2,438 teams and a .539 winning percentage after all. Such a 100-win curse claim doesn't compute. This just reflects the part of the human brain that wishes to see ghosts and UFOs where there are none. Rationality is the North Star.

I'll quote Matt from earlier in this post:

"According to "The Drunkards Walk," a popular science book about probability, teams that has a 55/45 advantage over their opponents would need to play best-of 269 games series for the results of those series to have a statistically significant results. A 7-game series tells you literally nothing. There is no curse!"

Ha Ha, since this was my thread originally, I'm gonna chime in here ...

#1 - Nevdully (Michael) was complaining about his MOST RECENT 100 win teams, that was likely but a fraction of his 100 win teams overall.

#2 - For those of you who think Strat doesn't do things behind the scenes, you need to look no further than Computer Football where for a long time Strat denied there was anything going on before finally admitting that YES there were "HIDDEN" re-rolls happening inside the game engine under certain pre-determined circumstances.

#3 - The number might not be 100, maybe it's 99 or 98 or 102, 100 just sticks out in everyone's mind. But no one will ever convince me that there is not "stuff" going on within the game engine that we are NOT AWARE OF that impact the game.

#4 - Someone saying it doesn't exist or is stupid is not PROOF that it doesn't exist.

#5 - I'd be curious to see if anyone remember's Petrosian/Last Druid/Bruce's take on this since he too played a ton of teams with arguably greater success than Nev???

#6 - If you haven't played enough teams to observe patterns or anomalies within your teams, start looking at the 100 win teams of your opponents. I personally don't think you need to have 1,000 or 2,000 teams to be affected, but managers with 200+ could certainly be affected.

#7 - Normalization is occurring and it has been largely proven. Again, watch the entire league, not just your own team to try to see patterns and oddities.

The bottom line is that a lot of very successful managers have walked away from this game for a reason and the reason isn't that they GOT BORED, the reason is that they saw things OVER AND OVER AGAIN that defied logic and common sense and it was impacting their results to the point that they felt compelled to stop playing a game that they truly enjoyed.

BINGO! It's why I'm down to playing only 3-4 teams at a time. I would post the blown game vs. the comeback after the 7th inning but I would be called a Conspiracy Theorist! BTW it's over 70% blown games after the 7th inning for me. Yes the research was done. 50-50 I could handle but almost 3-1.....NO!

Egvrich, I like all your many contributions here, and your excellent advice on designing small ball teams. You know the game and have helped many people out, and I agree with much of what you say. But on this one particular point, we'll just have to agree to disagree. Respect to you, my friend.

I think what you're describing there is what's called "Regression Towards The Mean." This does not take away the fact that there could, indeed, be some kind of conspiracy (for lack of a better word) in play here, but it does say that this experiment is not scientifically viable since its outcome would be predicted in any similar situation as the expected result. I have yet to see a reasonable explanation as to WHY Strat would cook the books, because if they ARE doing it, it's apparently chasing away the folks that are spending the most money on it.

That, combined with my base understanding of the study of statistics, is why I believe it is less likely that there is something going on behind the curtain here. I'd be interested in knowing more, but with the information available, I'll stick with my conclusion any day.

For what it's worth...I've played 63 teams...I;ve been in 16 playoffs and won 7 championships. Highest win total was 96, lowest was 84 or 86, don't remember for sure...only two of those teams were 100 win teams, 100 & 104. Both made the playoffs and both lost the championship game. Small sample for sure but does my .538 winning percentage qualify me for the curse ?

I have always known God alters my results when he thinks I am playing too much.
My 100 win teams here since 2003 across 121 teams total are 2-8 for championships. But it was always when I had more than a few teams playing. So there you have it. Confirmation. My punishment.

And don't say God doesn't exist because that isn't proof he doesn't, nor that he isn't doing this. Especially if you don't believe in God.

Thus why I only have played 121 teams.
Granted, it is a pretty good rate of 100-win teams against only 121 played, but they always seemed to be strong in their own division. Not sure why he picked 100 wins as a threshold but he has his reasons I am sure.

How he has the time or the worry to individually pay attention to me when I play too much strat online, among all the other billions of people and circumstances in the world, like wars, rapes, murders etc, is a mystery of my faith.
