These are things that have mostly been stated already, but I have a different hierarchy of importance:

1) Always build your team to your park. You'll be there for half the season. I get the need to also take your division opponents into consideration but my take on that is to just make sure I'm not a liability with them, but don't forget that if you make it to the playoffs, you probably won't be playing any of them. I started doing better in the playoffs when I eased back on that a little.

2) Maximize the talent you have on the field. It's a salary cap league, so you're looking for marginal advantages wherever you can find them, and if you have anyone over about $.60 (that's my cutoff but your mileage may vary) on your bench, you're already at a disadvantage. My bench guys are there to be defensive subs because then even if they're called on to fill in for 15 games, they won't be a defensive liability. A good team can survive a 15 game absence from a big hitter if you've at least got the fielding covered.

I take #2 to heart even moreso with smaller caps. I typically prefer S* pitchers but then you have to bench a .50 starter to hit the minimum of 5 SP. If I'm playing an $80m game, that dead money represents 1/16 of my budget, so I'll often lean towards 5 game starters.

I try and balance my team with 60-65% of my salary on hitters. The higher the cap, the higher the percentage spent on hitting.

I also find that I have better success with a balanced lineup, rather than bloating the top of the lineup with big salary hitters.

Like everyone else here, if I decided to, I could write pages of stuff, some helpful and some probably not. (I'm about a .523 player so take everything I say with a grain of salt.)

Thanks for posting your question in here. I really feel like this is the purest use of this discussion board.

1/16 should read 1/160. It's probably a typo but it's been bugging me since this a.m.

Yep I missed a zero on that. Unless you're in an $8 million league. And yes, I realize that that's impossible...

In regard to the 5th starter, I usually get a cheap guy who is both a starter and a relief pitcher with a 3 or 4 endurance. I usually make this guy my mop-up guy for those occasional blowups, which spares the bullpen. Then the spot is not a dead spot on my roster. Having that extra pitcher allows HAL to be a bit more aggressive in using the bullpen.

In the lower caps where I live, the 5 spot can be an Eggie/Bennett combo if there's hard left or right teams where they could spot start, and also specialists out of the pen when not starting.

Thanks Andy, it's either I get the first and last names mixed up, or **I** know exactly what I mean and no one else has the translation key :-)

On the topic of backup players, I used to strictly stick to .5M players or slightly above. This served me well, and I prefer defensive backups as well for the reasons Leeroy stated. However, how much should be spent on backups is more nuanced for injury-prone teams IMO.

Using an extreme example, an entire outfield of high-injury risk players. You could use cheap backups but unfortunately, they will be playing a lot and doing poorly either defensively or offensively, it could ruin your season. So I think spending a bit more for at least one quality backup is viable. Bonus points if they can also serve as a pinch runner for those times when your outfield is healthy. Curious how others feel about this as I have only spent in the 800k to 950k range on a backup a handful of times.

Started playing again recently and it has been rough. I start out good and then the team falls apart. Have never finished over .500 in six leagues. One league i started out 22-14 and now have gone 3-18 since. One league I am 20 - 64. I don't know if it is the ballpark combination with my team. Even good pitchers like W. Johnson went 0 -7 before a win. I am not asking for trade secrets but what ballparks work best for you and/or combination of pitching and hitting. Do you stick with the players forever even when they are hitting below the mendoza line.

The problem is that you "grew up" and the rest of us are the Lost Boys. Peter Pan (HAL) likes to tease adults when they show up in Neverland.

Seriously, I absolutely agree with the advice to avoid spending money on players that will not play much.
$1 million is better spent upgrading a 600 plate appearance starter than a 40 PA backup.
If you have a high injury catcher, get a decent backup.
You can spend a little more on a backup that can play multiple positions.
Etc.
