Moneyball 2024 Contract Decisions

Gentlemen,

It's time to start making offers to players not under contract for the 2024 SOM season. This includes all players who are pre-arb or arb eligible. For pre-arb players you are deciding whether to keep or cut (or trade if player control has any value). For arb eligible players you are deciding to cut, renew at the minimum qualified salary, or offer a contract extension. If you have a player entering an option year you need to decide whether to extend or cut. If you cut, you're on the hook for half the salary in 2024.

Had a question about the methodology of calculating the position figures. Are you going by the league spreadsheet for primary position? If so, several guys are mislabeled as to what is their primary position. For example, Joey Gallo is listed as a CF and Brandon Drury is listed as 3B. Also, how are uncarded guys factored in?

Just looking at some of the variances between positions like 2B and 3B and some others and trying to understand the math. Seems like a lot of work administratively and glad to help out if you need a hand doing any of this.

Phil: please check my math on this but I don't think that you are allowed to extend Robert for 4 years under our rules, because that will push his salary from 2m to 4m this season and your salary cap figure is already over 139 m with 140 m being our cap.


McCoveys are keeping all pre-arb guys and cutting none, exercising Luzardo's option but declining Loup's, offering arb3 to Rengifo and Grisham, settling with Guerrero at $4m for his final year of arbitration, and offering no contract extensions.

The extension wouldn't kick in until next season.

Oops, I think you're right Madal. I thought it was the opposite with Tatis' 4 year extension last year, but I double checked the spreadsheet and I was wrong.
