It's changed some, and a bit confusing. I'm a little confused if this only available to Niners, DC Irish, and Sean since nobody else has an open slot? Or can we reassign at will?

I stated earlier that I'm giving everyone the opportunity to select their Franchise Prospect this spring, since there's a new rule in place, new managers in the league, and a new commish. We'll start fresh.

And, I do agree with Palmtana - it does require some explanation from someone that's been in the league since its inception, what the intent was with the franchise tag. Is it to draft a deep prospect (Ethan Salas, for example) that might take more than 2 yrs to get through the system, and keep them as a prospect without having to promote them and take up a roster spot?

I don’t know tgat I have it completely correct but in a nut shell you can designate one prospect as a franchise prospect which makes them immune to the 2 year cut or promote rule. Mine was Francisco Alvarez whim I’ve promoted so I can now name another prospect as my franchise prospect.

Yes, that's it exactly. You can have rights in perpetuity to one player, so that you are not held hostage to the whims of the development decisions of MLB executives. Also there is consideration for the fact that the prospect draft used to require us to select most of our players from one MLB franchise. For example, I made the mistake of selecting the Kansas City Royals with the believe that one of their 1st round picks (Jackson Kowar and Daniel Lynch) might one day be a decent major league starter. So I took a flyer on Erick Pena and declared him as my franchise pick on the hope that he might one day approximate Carlos Beltran, who he was being compared to at that point in his young career.

I know what the rule says. I'm inquiring as to why it was adopted in the first place. unctarheel hints at some of that.
So would I best be served by tagging, say, 17 year old Leodalis De Vries?
