The first round of divisional play concluded last night---here's a look at the league after 18 games along with an introduction to the owners who accepted the challenge of managing 1.5 teams from the 1960s player set.

East---this is the division with the four highest player salaries available to them--the high rent district.

Cabrera24 returns from the 70s league to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers team supplemented by the Kansas City/Oakland Athletic hitters. This is the 26th team from the 60s set lead by Cabrera24----5 of the clubs made the playoffs and two were champions. The club is off to an exceptional start with a league best record of 14-4. The Dodgers are tied for the best run differential at +29. Don Sutton is off to a 4-0 start--1.41 ERA/.78 WHIP and Sandy Koufax is 3-0. 3.75 ERA/1.42 WHIP. Don Drysdale is 3-1 with an ERA of 1.86/WHIP OF 1.00.

YCBill returns to the theme league circuit. YC has led 15 teams with an impressive win percentage of .519, 6 playoff teams and 3 championships. YC leads the San Francisco Giant team supplemented by the Houston Astros offensive squad. The Giants are 12-6 and are tied for the league best run differential of +29. The 4 primary starters are an impressive 12-4 with the highest ERA being 3.07 (Mike McCormick) and best being Juan Marichal (2.27). The offense is lead by WIllie McCovey .333/.377/.614, Rusty Staub (.359/.452/.491 and Orlando Cepeda .409/.435/.591. What's scary is Willie Mays hasn't started hitting yet--.246/.329/.449.

LMBombers is leading the Chicago White Sox team with the Philadelphia Phillies hitting squad. LM has led 59 clubs using hte 60s player set of which 23 teams have made the playoffs and 6 took home the crown. The White Sox are currently 7-11, 7 games off the pace. Gary Peters was released after going 1-2 with an ERA of 9.45/WHIP of 2.03. On the bright side, Tony Gonzales leads the club in hitting at .292/.306/.542. The White Sox have only made 4 errors in the first 18 games--3 by Nellie Fox which is a surprise.

JJB92 had the first pick in the team draft and went with the Milwaukee Braves and supplemented the club with the hitters of the Washington Senators. This is JJB's 6th team from the 60s--3 of the first 5 made the playoffs but he is still seeking his first championship. The season has not been kind to the Braves as evidenced by a record of 3-15 and a league worst run differential of -48, by far the worst in the league. Supposed staff ace Phil Niekro has managed to lost his first 5 starts despite a respectable ERA of 3.79. Lew Burdette 0-2, 4.91/1.91 and Ron Reed 0-2 7.25/1.83 and Bob Hendley 23.60, 3.75 have all been released. Things can only get better I suppose.

Central Division

KaiserWill4 is making his debut using the 60s Superstar set. He leads the Cincinnati Reds team supplemented by the KC/Oakland Athletics pitching squad. The Reds are off to a nice start at 12-6. Gerry Arrigo--a .75 pitcher--has been involved in a lot of outcomes---Gerry is 4-3 with 2 saves in the 9 games he's appeared in. Gerry has an ERA of 2.25/WHIP of .95 and qualifies as an early surprise. The center field posiiton has been impressive---it's a platoon situation with Vada Pinso pacing the offense (.460/.460/.595) and Tommy Harper supplementing that at .487/.548/.784. The team run differential is only +3 but the Reds are feasting on right handed pitching winning 7 of 8 games.

DWG joins the theme league fun with his entry of the Detroit Tigers team/Houston Astros pitching. DWG has led 24 clubs from the 60s set making the playoffs twice and winning championships both times. The Tigers are 11-7, just one game behind the Reds. Bill Freehan has paced the offense--he leads the league with 7 home runs and has already driven in 22 runs. His slash line is .313/.387/.672. Willie Horton has added to the offensive fun--he's at .333/400/.704. The Tigers can look forward to improved production from Al Kaline---Al is only hitting .219/.286/.453 so as he improves, so should the Tigers.

MemphisJohn joins the theme league fun---leading the St. Louis Cardinals team supplemented with the Chicago Cubs hitters. Memphis has led 40 previous teams from the 60s, making the playoffs an impressive 25 times and winning 10 championships. The Cards/Cubs are off to an 8-10 start. Bob Gibson is off to a good start at 2-1 with an ERA of 3.02 but a WHIP of only .89. On the other end of the spectrum, Steve Carlton is off to a tough start at 0-3 5.94/1.62. Offensively, the third base combo of Ken Boyer (.268/.400/.711) and Ron Santo (.306/.457/.472) have made it tough to choose a starter at 3rd base. Curt Flood is at .321/.337/.469 while Ernie Banks has launched 5 home runs in the first 18 games.

With the last pick in the team draft, NewGuy1912 selected the Minnesota Twins and supplemented them with the Chicago Cubs pitching. While the pick looked good, the results have not matched the hope. The Twins are off to a 5-13 start for NewGuy who is making his 60s superstar debut. Camilo Pascual was released after going 0-3 with an 8.27/1.69 line. Offensively Harmon Killebrew has hit 5 home runs to pace the offense. Jim Merritt has pitched well 2-1 2.68/.76.

West: The 4 teams with the lowest salary available to them.

The Baltimore Orioles team/New York Mets pitchers are led by BurleyNorseman and lead the division with a record of 11-7. Burley won the 70s team challenge and is leading his 3rd team from the 60s set. Burley reached the playoffs once and is seeking his first championship in this set. Jerry Koosman is off to a good start--he's 2-0 with an ERA of 2.31/WHIP of .95. Jim Gentile is off to a good start--he's at .307/.463/.565 with 5 home runs and 18 walks. Whitey Herzog is at .310/.417/.310 helping the offense. The Oriole/Mets have a run differential of +15.

Drabb9529 leads the New York Yankee team/Philadelphia Phillies pitchers--the club is 10-8, just one game off the pace. Drabb is making his debut in the 60s player set. Chris Short is off to a good start--he's 2-1 with a 1.87/1.07 ERA/WHIP. Mickey Mantle is off to a .271/.434/.424 start so as he improves, so should the offense. Roger Maris is off to a tough start--he's at .159/.234/.362. Roy White is making it tough to keep him out of the lineup--he's at .417/.462/.583 thus far.

Teams have to be careful trying to take the extra base on the Pirates offense---the Pirates acquired Reggie Jackson from the Dodger/Athletics which allows Nol to have an outfield of Roberto Clemente -6, Reggie Jackson -4 and Willie Stargell -4 if desired. Sam McDowell is off to a great start--he's aat 3-1 but has 52 strike outs in 38 innings. Roberto Clemente is packing the offense---he's at .333/.373/.580. Reggie Jackson has contributed 6 home runs and 16 RBI. The Pirates are currently 9-9 with a run differntial of +1.

Davesodu leads the Boston Red Sox team/Los Angeles Angels pitching staff. Davesode has led 5 teams from the 60s set making the playoffs 2 times and winning one championship. The Red Sox are 6-12 paced by Dean Chance and his 3-2 record 2.19/1.05 WHIP. Rico Petrocelli has launched 6 home runs/driving in 12 runs thus far. Carl Yastremski is off to a good start too--he's hit 4 home runs and driven in 12. THe Red Sox have a run differntial of -9 thus far.

Cabrera24 has his KC Oakland (hitters) Dodgers in first place with a league best record of 25-14. The Dodgers also have the best run differential at +40. For the week, the Dodgers went 11-10. As expected, pitching is a big part of the story—Don Drysdale is 6-2 with an ERA of 1.40/WHIP of .99. Don Sutton continues to pitch well—he’s 7-1 2.03/1.06. Sandy Koufax is 5-2 3.28/1.15 with 67 strike outs in 68 innings. Offensively, if you had Maury Wills as the RBI leader for the club, cash in your ticket. Maury is tied with Gil Hodges each driving in 16 runs. Maury has scored 25 runs to lead the team in that category and has swiped 10 bases. The Dodgers are an impressive 18-7 versus right handed pitching.

YCBill and his San Francisco Giants (Houston Astros hitting) is one game off the pace at 24-15 after going 12-9 for the week. The Giants are third in the league in runs scored. Joe Morgan is at .291/.412/.383 with 8 stolen basis. Rusty Staub continues his hot hitting—Rusty is at .356/.433/.534. As expected, Willie Mays has improved—he’s now at .293/.376/.520 with 10 home runs and 29 runs knocked in. Jim Ray Hart has contributed 9 homers while Willie McCovey has gone yard 8 times.

The Philly (hitters) Chicago White Sox led by the steady hand of LMBombers are now 17-22 after going 10-11 during the week. Joe Horlen is 5-3 (3.47/1.18). The bullpen has performed well—none of the primary relief pitchers have an ERA of more than 4 and Hoyt Wilhelm has already saved 7 games. Clay Dalrymple (.205/.286/.227 in 49 plate appearances, Tommy Agee (087/.160/.130 in 25 PAs and Al Smith (.207/.220/.259 in 58 plate appearances were all relieved of their duties. On the positive side, Dick Allen has hit 12 home runs, just two off the league leaders. Roy Sievers has blasted 11 home runs and leads the team with 29 runs batted in. Roy is at .301/.375/.646.

JJB92 and his Brave Mini Senators (hitters) continue to lag the leaders and are the only team trailinga the division leader by a double digit result. The Mini Senators went 10-11 during the week and are now 13-26 with a league worst -58 run differential. The underlying numbers for Phil Niekro look decent—3.73 ERA1.49 WHIP with only 6 home runs allowed in 70 innings. However, the win loss record tells a different story-Phil is 0-8. The bullpen hasn’t helped—Bob Shaw was released after posting a 7.73 ERA/2.29 WHIP. Cecil Upshaw 8.53/1.90 was also released. Clay Carroll was recalled even though his ERA is 9.66/WHIP 3.22. Hitting wise, Joe Torre has been a contributor—he’s at .285/.352/.520 with 7 home runs.

Central:

MemphisJohn and his Harry’s Cards and Cubs (hitting) seized control of the division after going a very impressive 16-5 for the week and are now 24-15 for the season. With the second best run differential of +36, the Cards now hold a one game lead over the Cincinnati Red Athletics. Bob Gibson has been dominant—he is 5-1 but has only allowed 2.15 ERA/.,94. Ray Sadecki has matched Bob’s record of 5-1 and has an ERA of 2.22. Lindy McDaniel has posted 3 saves and 2 wins to the cause. On offense, Billy Williams (.329/.403.529), Ron Santo (.291/.381/.581), and Ernie Banks (.277/.307/.515) have all been major contributors making MemphisJohn’s decision to add the Cubs hitters look genius.

KaiserWill4 and his Cincinnati RedAthletics (pitchers) went 11-10 for the week and are now at 23-16, one game off the pace. Jim O’Toole has been brilliant—he’s 6-0 with an ERA of 1.16/WHIP of .79. Jim Nash also has an WHIP below one at .94 although he’s 5-4. Hitting wise, Tommy Davis was acquired from the Dodgers for Bob Purkey and was inserted into left field. Tommy is at .324/.377.563 with 5 home runs in 71 at bats. The CF combination of Vada Pinson (.388/.402/.520) and Tommy Harper (.400/.463/.600) continue to form an impressive platoon combination.

DWG and his Detroit TigerAstros (pitchers) went 10-11 for the week and are now at 21-18. Seven players are already in double digits for runs batted in led by Bill Freehan with 35 which leads the league. Norm Cash (20), Jake Wood (18), Al Kaline (17), Jim Northrup (16), Willie Horton (15) and Rocky Colovito (14) have all contributed to the second highest scoring team in the league. On the mound, John Hiller has saved 11 games without any blown saves. Six pitchers have started games giving DWG the ability to match up against his opponents weaknesses.

NewGuy1912 and his Two Parts Twins, One Part Cubs (pitching) went 11-10 for the week and are now at 16-23. The four primary starters all have 3 wins—Fergie Jenkins 3-4, Larry Jackson 3-2, Jim Merritt 3-5 and Jim Kaat 3-4. Al Worthington has saved 10 games, blowing just one. Interestingly, Al has not allowed a run this season is 18 innings. Scoring runs has been a challenge—Zolio Versalles has been a pleasant surprise at .307/.355.475 and Harmon Killebrew has driven in 27 runs—Harmon has drawn 29 walks, good for second in the league. On the downside, Jim Lemon was released after posting .194/.247/.282 in 77 plate appearances.

West:

Nol15736 and his Pittsburgh Bucs Tribe (pitching) took over first place in the west after going 12-9 during the week. The Tribe is now 21-18, good for a 3 game lead. The Tribe has been propelled by Sam McDowell who has struck out 77 hitters in 62 innings and Sonny Siebert (3-1, 2.85 ERA/1.21 WHIP. ) Sam has an ERA of 2.73/WHIP of 1.20. Luis Tiant has delivered 7 saves and an ERA of 1.61. Offensively, the Tribe is lead by Roberto Clemente .399/.435/.633 with 8 home runs 28 RBI. Reggie Jackson has added 7 home runs and 19 runs knocked in. Gene Alley has surprised with a .296/.315//.396. The Tribe doesn’t run much—just one stolen base (Matty Alou) with 4 stealers being thrown out.


BurleyNorseman and his Baltimore Orioles/Mets (pitching) slid into second place after going 7-14 during the week, 18-21 overall. Jerry Koosman is 4-0 which is impressive but with an ERA of 4.54/WHIP of 1.23. Tom Seaver has an ERA of 2.67/WHIP of 1.29 but is 2-4. The bullpen has been a challenge thus far—only Tug McGraw has an ERA in the 4 range (4.05) while everyone else is between 5.06 and 6.43. On the offensive side, Jim Gentile and Boog Powell have provided offensive firepower—Jim leads the league with 14 home runs while Boog Powell has hit 11.Brooks Robinson has contributed 7 home runs and 23 runs driven in. Mark Belanger leads the team in hitting with a .321 average and .365/.378 slash line.

Davesodu and his LA Angels (pitching) BoSox moved into third place going 11-10 during the week and is now at 17-22. . The BoSox are now the leading run scoring team in the league. The offense is powered by Carl Yaztremski who has launched 11 home runs, 10 doubles and is hitting .315/.373/.610. Rico Petrocelli has contributed 9 home runs. Duke Snider was acquired via a trade and is off to a great start at .433/.485/1.067. Pete Runnels is at .302/.412/.512. On the mound, Dean Chance is 6-4 with 3.41/1.18 while Larry Dierker is 4-1 3.63/1.36.

Drabb9529 and his New York Yankees Phillies (pitching) had a tough week going 5-16 for the week and are now 15-24. Jim Bunning 1-6 3.86/1.36 and Whitey Ford 1-5 5.65/1.26 were both released—Fritz Peterson and Mel Stottlemyre took their spots in the rotation. Chris Short continued to pitch well—he’s 4-2 2.50/1.04.Roger Maris got really hot during the week—he was .159/.234/.362 at the start of the week—he now leads the league in home runs with 14 and his slash line is .269/.325/.597. Mickey Mantle has not yet hit his stride—he’s at 4 home runs .261/.442/.417. Joe Pepitone (478/.520/.609), Tom Tresh .346/.370/.692 and Roy White .360/.385/.480 are making their case to keep them in the lineup. With seemingly ample offensive power present, it's interesting that the Yankees are the lowest scoring team in the league.
