Bill Butland

PostSat Jul 06, 2024 10:09 am

Ya know, often I will look up players careers on BBRef, I especially enjoy seeing their career stat arc, and occasionally will read their SABR bio. I was just looking up Butland (never heard of him before ATG), when I notice how short his career was, just 4 MLB seasons with his best (the carded one) being 1942 during WW2. So I check out his minor league seasons, then move on to his SABR bio, where he is referred to as a sore armed RIGHT HANDED pitcher. Yes, he was a right hander and his Strat card, which I have used several times, has him as a lefty! How many other players are not listed as hitting or throwing from the proper side? Anyone ever research this?

Big Fred Whitfield. Ouch!

And Matt, I think I trust Baseball Reference more than Wikipedia.

How about Ebay? Should we trust what they say? ;) There is a Sporting News photo for sale ($14.99) from 1940 that shows him throwing RH!

Sorry. Just trying to help. MLB.com also has him as a righty hitter and a lefty pitcher

Hmm, I guess pics don't lie. Unusual that both reference and the SABR bio have him throwing righty when these other sources say otherwise. As Rosanna Rosannadana would say, nevermind.

any thread with a Rosanne Rosannadanna post is a friend of mine (as my grandmother used to say....)

yeah sorry mike, we've all heard the Pete Lacock, Rusty Kuntz, jokes before (just slightly behind the auto racer Dick Trickle on the all time list) and all them trailing the #1 best sports name ever (Mom and Dad "why ?", didn't u ever hear Johnny Cash's "Boy Named Sue" ?).....drum roll please

the backup QB on the 1973 Atlanta Falcons (who actually started 29 games over a 10 year career)

FYI, on the PC rosters, Butland is a rhp for the '47 BoSox; lhp for the '40, '42, '46 Sox.... ambidextrous mofo.
