Share Your Bargains With Everyone

Go ahead, spill the beans on your favorite value players, guys that are definitely underpriced.

I'll start with one that no one ever uses but me:

Lamar Hoyt $4.41

-4 Hold
1 WP
2 Balk
e11
S7*

A great bargain in a pitcher's park. I've had him be a 20 game winner more than once.

2007 Chris Young cf 2(-1) $2.12m

pretty much a 30 homerun bat that won’t do much else. A solid 7/8 hitter in a 80m league that can hit 30 and drive in 70+ runs. Plays good defense has a solid arm and is a good runner.

Edit : I see everyone listing a bunch so I’d like to add a few more ….

For a lefty park : 1988 Ozzie Guillen / 2012 Brandon Crawford. Give me that cheap 1 defensive ss
Also cheap 2b lefty options 2018 Kolton Wong (defensive option) and 2015 Odor - the cheap 1 defensive ss speak for themselves not much offense but will give you a great defensive season. Same for wong at second. Wong has a better bat than the ss options. If you’re okay sacrificing defense at 2b Odor will mash in a lefty park for less than 2 million.

And two more cheap righty options: both right fielders 1987 Glenn Wilson rf 1(-4) and 1956 Hank Bauer rf1(-3). Both will give you great defense Bauer has a little pop too.

I've had good luck with that card. Hoyt went 21-13 in his last completed season with 6 shutouts!

I mostly play 80m and below and prefer smallball teams. Some of my regular players are:

1919 Nemo Leibold, @ $2.78 he is an excellent leadoff hitter.
2009 Skip Schumaker @ .96 he might be the best bargain as 1/2 of a OF platoon available.
1924 Judy Johnson @ $3.77 good 3b value, consistently hits over .300 with 40+ doubles.
1924 Muddy Ruel @$1.90 great value at catcher
1993 Lou Whitaker @$2.22 he's a 3e22 at 2b so not a great defensive value, but he can hit right handed pitching!
1916 Dick Whitworth is my favorite starter in any low singles park. He has won 31 for me @ 60m and consistently wins 20+ at 80m or below.

All these guys show up on my teams regularly and perform!

I hesitated a minute to respond to this, because everyone has a short list of these cards that they like to keep close to their vest, but I was reminded of how many vets helped me out with this stuff when I found this game. In the spirit of that, I'm going to encourage everyone else to put something out here.

Keep in mind that I play a lot of extreme low cap leagues ($30-$50) so I can't testify as to if they'd perform at $80, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

Sam Bankhead 1936 - For less than $1 million, you get a guy in your outfield with a -3 arm that has 9+/10+ doubles per side. He hit 53 doubles for me once in a $45 million league.

Jim Merritt 1965 - If the cap is low enough and the park is right, the shutdown that he deals on lefties leaves his weakness against righties as a small price to pay for what you'll get.

Paul Sorrento - In a lefty park he'll easily get you 40 home runs if he gets to hit enough right handed pitching.

Vince Coleman - either card, depending on how he fits in your cap. The defense is so so, but he's hit well over .300 for me many times, and if you let him run, he'll steal 100 bags.

Matt Nokes for $1.67 gives adequate defense and in a lefty or hr park can easily hit 30 homers- Big plus homers vs lefties and righties

Burt Shotton costs less than Coleman, steals nearly as well, plays better defense and can give you similar offense for less money.

1913 Casey Stengel 2.34 Good defense and OBP for CF (or corners) in small ball team.
1939 Crosetti or 1988 Guillen . Earn their salaries with glove alone.
1911 Jimmie Archer same, at C

Pen Gilliard/Phil Weintraub DH platoon is an insane leadoff or #2 hitter combo in a small ball park for about $2.7 mill.

George Grantham is a sleeper platoon mate at 1B. Better defense and injury protection than Carew or Mazzili.
