more than a few kind GMs have helped me in my limited experience, and I chalk up any success so far, at least partly more to the advice that was generously given

my inexperience might make these suggestions below either naive or overlapping, as I think most experienced GMs would know these already, but in the spirit of this conversation,

cheap defense

Howard .50, plays 2 IF and 2 OF at "2", and a couple others also...good jack of all trades, even tho can't hit
Pennington (same as above for IF only)
Jap Washington, all OF at '2' and hits a bit (41 OBP chances from both sides of plate)
Ted Page
Harry lunte (2b/SS)
Ski melillo (2b/ss)
Leroy Grant 1b....(41 OBP chances from both sides of plate, better value than Phil Todt or Piper Davis IMHO)
Al newman all 3 IF

decent defense and doesn't kill u at the plate

Newt Allen .73
Fred Stanley (all 3 IF at "3")

good defense and doesn't kill u at plate

Nick Punto all 3 IF at "2", good baserunning/stealing, and avg 40 OBP, although his cost is 1.06....but nicer sometimes especially one or more IF starters are injury prone or weak fielders
Pokey Reese .96 great fielding at 2B/SS, not quite as good hitter as Punto

cheap bats

C - Decuir
Wesley
Bailey (both Bob and Gene)
Rogan .57
Holland .67

good SP/RP in pitchers park (especially if your league doesn't have many or too many hitters parks you'll face on the road)

Haren
Newcombe
Cole
Hoyt

Roebuck 3.07

I think everyone knows the RH/LH specialists so don't need to list

I'm not sure I have any bargains that nobody knows about. Some of my faves:

John Britton in a 3B platoon, he always hits for a high avg and you can use him just about anywhere in the batting order

1934 Jo-Jo Moore, I use this card a lot and I don't see a lot of other managers use him. Almost always hits .300 with tons of doubles and very low gbA's, and of course great defense and arm. I like to use him as my #2 hitter.

If the % of lefty pitching in your division heads north of 40%, the 9L Bagwell card becomes a huge bargain. He will put up monster numbers in any park.

As an alternative to JoJo Moore, there is Nats skipper Davey Martinez $4.69. Better hitter and very marginally inferior defense. Plus, a bit more flexibility. He is rarely used.

One obvious value card not mentioned is Randy Choate $0.78. But he must be well known since there is only like a 50% chance of getting him in the draft. When you miss on him, you get Terry Leach $0.78!

A few months back everybody was complaining about how benji Molina was much more valuable that’s the typical .50 hitter.

Unless I'm platooning, and quite often even if I am, Molina is pretty much on every draft card for me. Best backup C in the set by a mile.

Yeah idk. The defense is great but there’s a bunch that are very similar. All of which have little offense. Zunino has more power , Petway has a better arm, Killefer is a similar card slightly more expensive. If im looking for more of a bat Wolters has a .340 obp or so for his .50 card. I think there’s plenty of good / similar options available

I just love his defense. And his offense isn't too bad actually for the price.

There's some controversy as to whether the catcher blocking the plate max rule is on or off. If it's on then Molina is the best by a fair bit. If it's off then he drops back to the pack and is about equal to Decuir, Wolters, and Manwaring. Great 50-center either way.
