Historically we have always had to make promotion decisions before the cards come out.

What happens is if you wait till the cards come out you will already be at 40 players after free agency and not have a spot on your roster. You can promote a prospect any time you have roster space so you could promote them during free agency if you wanted but not after you've signed your 40th player. The next opportunity would be between seasons 1 & 2

Paul Long:

cuts: Wade Miley, Kyle Hendricks

Prospect promotions: Colton Cowser, Dylan Crews, Colton Keith, Henry Davis

Prospect Release (rules state that I must cut or promote as it's been 3 years...if this is wrong then just keep him as a prospect for now): Will Bednar

If I'm wrong about the 3 year thing for prospects and we don't have to cut/promote the 2022 drafted group then I want to retain Davis and Bednar as prospects.

If I do have to make that decision now, then promote Davis and release Bednar.

thanks,

Paul

You are right about the cut or promote prospect rule after 3 seasons of “holding” the prospect.

I still get thrown off by the timing nuances in this league’s rules.

Please confirm my understanding.

I have Chas McCormick, signed only through 2024, and Chistopher Morel, signed through 2025. They are both on FA contracts. I also control Marco Luciano, who is prearb3 in ‘24 and arb1 in ‘25.

Here’s what I think. Please correct me if/where I’m wrong.

They are all three already signed for the 2024 season (which is sim seasons coming up in 2025), and the cuts I make now are in regards to the 2025 MLB season, which we will sim in 2026.

Chas had a terrible year in ‘24, will be of no use to me in our upcoming season(s). He’s a FA in 2025. If I want him off my 40 man prior to the FASP, do i have to release him by Nov 30, or can I release him at any time before the FASP? Regardless, I know that his ‘24 salary still counts against my cap if I waive him, unless someone picks him off the wire before the FASP.

What about Morel? Are there any differences due to the fact that he is signed for ‘25 as well?

As for Luciano, who isn’t in my future plans, if I want to make room on my 40 man for the FASP coming up in January, I need to cut him by Nov 30. If I don’t cut him now, do I still have till March 31 to cut him for ‘25? Or did that option go away with the early deadline and the only options at that point are to commit to $1.5MM for ‘25 or take a chance with arbitration?

The cuts that are available now are for your 2024 team. They are made if you need extra roster spots for signing players in the upcoming free agency. You currently only have 11 free spots and have a number of prospects I think you are going to want to promote. McCormick seems like a good choice to cut for the reasons you mentioned.

Yes the deadline is Nov 30

No real difference. If you cut him you will be on the hook for his salary for both 24 and 25 but the roster spot will available.

The option does not go away. You can cut him now to open up the roster spot or keep him for the 24 season and just not offer him a contract when you do your contracts for 2025.
