2000s: Leo Nunez/Juan Carlos Oviedo

PostTue Mar 25, 2025 10:02 pm

I just concluded a game involving the 2011 Florida Marlins, and in doing some post game research and cross referencing with Baseball Reference, the relief pitcher on the Windows team is Leo Núñez, but the player with the corresponding stats was listed in BR as Juan Oviedo. I thought that the name must have been wrong in the Windows game, and then I saw the small print in BR.. Known as Leo Núñez through 2011.

Interesting story... https://www.baseball-reference.com/bull ... los_Oviedo

That having been said, it appears that Oviedo does not have a card in the 2000s set, even though it appears that he likely meets minimum requirements. During the 2005 season, he played in 41 games, and between 2008 and 2011 he played at least 45 games. Was this an oversight from SOM, or was this intentional because they didn't know which name to use??

The story of Juan Carlos Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Núñez, is indeed fascinating. His name change in 2011 revealed a deeper narrative about identity and opportunity in professional sports. As for his absence from the 2000s set, it’s hard to say definitively whether it was an oversight or a deliberate choice by Strat-O-Matic (SOM). Given his consistent appearances and contributions during the specified years, he seems to meet the criteria for inclusion.

It’s possible that the name discrepancy caused confusion, or perhaps there were other factors at play, such as licensing or data availability. SOM might have opted to avoid potential complications related to his dual identity during that period.
