$80 mil Bullpen help

PostTue Apr 15, 2025 2:29 pm

Hello! I haven't played much ATG in years and am rusty. Bullpens are the "black box" of strat and this is a tiny sample size, but I neglected to have roles and now do----both have seem to lose me games. The "unique" situation is I have two RP that are very similar. Not a clear #1 and #2. $1.49 T. Martinez and $1.48 M. Mantei

https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1804422 ---- '95-'24 World Series Theme League so weird player pool

Currently I have Kittridge and Hassler as R and L specialists, and Martinez AND Mantei set to Closer and Setup? I used to never do that.... do I need each to have a set role? I did move each to "Slow Hook" which seems WRONG after last series :)

***Mantei, a great RP but an R1, pitched 3 IP in g27 last night, throwins 59 pitches. Got the loss. Martinez didn't pitch in g26's implosion or in g27.....

How you set this cheap bullpen? Or modern ATG strategies in general? **I used to have like Joe Beggs ($2.42) and Steven Howe ($2.09) as my closer and Setup. Or maybe Sutter super-reliever. But usually cheap bullpens (with a clear-ish #1) and pitch alot of S7s which I know is increasingly against the grain.....

I think you’re better off with just setting the l/r roles ….. with assigning everyone roles Hal will use any of the relievers for the non specified roles. Maybe do one of them for both setup and closer and have the other one unspecified. I usually just go 2 lefty specialist and 2 for righty and have one rp with no role. Usually a 4 or 5 fatigue on that pitcher so he can go longer.

I’ve found, at least in my experience, to limit the use of BP roles. At most I will set a LH and RH with quick hook. Sometimes I won’t even specify quick hook. I have found HAL does a reasonable job of using the correct reliever for the situation. I’m going through a lot of experimentation currently so I can’t swear to this practice yet. But like I said HAL seems to do a good job.

As a general rule, the more options you give HAL (more "decent" relievers), the better he will do.

Settings can sometimes handcuff his decisions.
