The Amazing, yet Inconsistent Jeff Bagwell

Two of the things that keep bringing me back is the huge numbers certain players can put up in the right circumstances (I'm a stat geek - guilty as charged) and the wide swings in the same players' performance based on different circumstances.

Check out the $11.6M Jeff Bagwell performances. In an 80M league, he bats .303, 43 HRs, and an OPS under 1.000. In a 100M league, he bats .391, 90 HRs, and and an OPS of 1.350. Both Barnstormer leagues, so high quality competition. Weird wild stuff.

With that Bags card, Id think the lefty/righty splits would particularly important, yeah?

More AB's vs. LH's does help as do the parks both home & away...

Agreed, but it's still amazing. You'd expect him to face overall worse pitching in the 80M league, but he batted almost 100 points better from each side of the plate in the 100M league. No conclusions to be drawn - just an interesting stat as an intermission to the other problems.

Ballpark matters for most hitters. Though I think in Strat the influence of ballpark is a little too much.

Regardless, multiple a difference in parks by 12 if a league is mostly hitter or mostly pitcher and you can get wild swings, especially with a card like Bagwell.

And for those who like conspiracy theories if the bullpen logic is not working right so HAL is countering with righty relievers as often as possible against an unbalanced card like Bagwell's and .....

Of course I would never contribute to a conspiracy theory. By the way did I tell you me and a friend's theory that OJ Simpson shot Kennedy.

Bags has one of those cards that really needs the right situation. I've had good and bad seasons from him, and I realized after the fact that the splits and parks had a major affect on his output.

Yep. The key is L/R splits, since Bags just kills LHP.

In the first league, where Bags comparatively underperformed (if a .978 OPS is underperforming), he had just 143 AB (out of 594) vs LHP. That's an unusually low total. A mere 24%.

In the 2nd league, where he was fantastic, he had 216 AB vs LHP. However, in this league, while he killed LHP, he also hit RHP unusually well. So some of it may be the rolls--luck can be a big factor, along with context.
