C 5 (+5)

PostWed Sep 05, 2012 6:10 pm

I'm in a 200 mil theme league and I don't have a good hitting C. My best option is a C-2 (-2) for 3 mil. However, I do have a great SS for 9 mil that can also C at at a C -5 (+5) and put in another quality ss at 6 mil. Has anyone else ever tried that? Not an idea situation, however I can use another good quality hitter. Do you think it's worth it to use a C-5

Point of comparison: right now I'm in a league where a manager is trying an out-of-position catcher who has a 4(0) rating. After 48 games he's given up a whopping 87 stolen bases, with 23 passed balls and 10 throwing errors. And that's a 0 arm, compared to your +5. Don't think you want to go there.

I think you should start Boudreau at catcher. McGuire would like to join his buddy Canseco as a 40/40 guy.

Just based on the 5 rating, he would likely give up an average of 1 extra run every 10 games in just CatcherX range rolls. That does NOT include the SB and throwing errors.

Not a good idea for the season, BUT perhaps as a spot starter against a team of leadfoot runners. (maybe) :ugeek:

Here's Boudreau's full defensive line:

c-5(+5)e11,T-20(pb-20)

That's pretty much as bad as it could possibly be. Essentially, you're giving the entire opposing team except their catchers license to steal every time they get a jump, with virtual impunity. And good stealers can steal without a jump, again with virtual impunity.

With all those steal attempts and a t-20, a ton of balls would go into CF for erros, so those runners would go from 1b to 3b and a runner on 3B will score. Plus you've got the pb-20. Yikes!

In one recent 80M league, I used Mike Piazza's cheaper card at C. Two of my SP*'s had 0 holds. The other two had +1 holds. Piazza's defensive line reads: c-4(+1)e5,T-7(pb-6). The defensive damage was 261 SB, .774 OSB%, 23 PB, and 29 errors by Piazza.

Now compare Piazza's c-4(+1)e5,T-7(pb-6) to Boudreau's c-5(+5)e11,T-20(pb-20).

You'd be lucky to get away with 400 SB, 900 OSB%, 95 PB, 50 errors. How many runs that equals, I'm not sure...but a lot.

On the other hand, you can use Lou's excellent 1e18 at SS and find somebody (anybody!) else to play catcher. That's what I'd do.
