Five Man Rotation Issue

PostSat Sep 22, 2012 9:59 am

I checked the current topics to see if anyone had mentioned this. If I missed it, forgive me. With a current team, I set up a 5-man rotation with four pitchers that need four days rest and one pitcher that needs only three between starts. I kept noticing that my rotation seemed a little scrambled from series to series, so I investigated. The game is starting the stronger pitcher as often as possible, moving him up in the rotation, instead of following the five-man sequence I set up.

Any way to fix this?

The computer manager - genius - assumes that if you have a SP* you want to pitch him every 4th game. The ONLY way to prevent this is to continually update your per-game starting pitcher assignments for the next 21 games every week. This will take priority over your default rotation, and forces HAL to start only those you've designated.

You can fix this by using per game starters, but the rotation assumes priority if no assignment is made and it will look at the starters in this way.

Rotation set as pitcher a,b,c,d,e
If A is rested he starts the next game
If A is not available but B is he starts the next game
If A and B are not available and C is he starts the next game.....and so on.

Now say B is a * guy and the rest are not, Then B will get moved up to start as soon as he is available (assuming A is not)

In other words, HAL prioritizes starter for every game individually based on your rotation priorities.

Therefore another way around this would possible be to place your only * starter in the #5 slot in the rotation (lowest priority). This would keep your 5 man rotation intact.

(if you wanted him to start the season at something other than the 5th game, all you need to do is set your per game starters for the first 5 games and then allow your 5 man rotation (with the * guy at #5) to continue.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses. I figured that if I put all of the pitchers in manually instead of using the rotation, that would work, but since no major league team sets their rotation the way this game does, that would seem like a fault with the programming. Right now, we can never mix any * and non-* starters in a rotation because the game will eventually start them out of order for you. My next team will have one expensive guy and four pigs to take advantage of this. We're getting into something other than baseball at this point, though.

That is a peculiar trait of the game engine interface...although when is it ever worthwhile to have a mixed staff, unless it is like a 200M cap or something?

When you add up the price per start, it seems like it will always be less bang for the buck by mixing staffs, since the * guys have a premium in their prices, and the non star guys don't.

Maybe I'm missing out

And why would you want to pay the premium price for the * pitcher and then not use him every 4th game to get his designated value from him? Take Reulback for example. Two similar cards with one priced 1.64 mil more than the other. why pay that extra and then only use it every 5th day just because you have 4 other non * guys?
