I am new to Strat-o-matic, and got a lot of good responses to an earlier posting recarding a Live Draft league/

What I don't quite understand yet is 1) What is the purpose of drafting a ballpark, and how many are in a starting lineup 2) And what are the dice rolls used for?

You draft a ballpark if you want to make sure that every owner has a different stadium.

The dice rolls determine the results in the game of SOM. Before they were not showing us what the rolls were and only giving us the results of the roll. Now we can see on the hitter's or pitcher's card where the dice rolls came from exactly. If the first number is 1, 2 or 3 it comes from the hitter's card. If the first number is 4, 5 or 6 it comes from the pitcher's card. Look at the card images.

You can pick any ball park you like. Some favor singles hitters(Fenway), some favor home run hitters, and some favor pitchers(Petco...San Diego). There is a thread showing how all the ballparks affect potential home runs and singles. If there is a symbol like this: # next to a HR or a fly out on a pitcher or hitter's card,... that means the ballpark comes into play. If the ball park is say; 1-15 for a potential HR,...that would be a homer park. If it is 1-5(out of 20) that is more of a pitcher's park. There is a lot to learn about this game. You need to check out the newbie thread, and read as much strategy as possible. Then jump in, and learn from your mistakes. Good luck!

In an SOMO live draft, you do not have to choose your stadium until the draft is over. This allows you some flexibility as the draft progresses. However, your first pick usually points you in the direction you will go. If you take say Cobb, you are usually headed towards a pitching park, but not always. You well then be faced with a decision on pick #2, is Cobb a leadoff hitter in a medium power or slugging park or are you playing smallball? If you grab Sisler, you play smallball. If you take Maris, you go slugging park and pick accordingly as the draft progresses. I would keep an open mind, but you do have to commit fairly early, as your top picks should be able to excel in the park you ultimately choose. In an "unofficial" live draft(non-TSN), your thinking with regards to your park during the draft should be the same, except you pick the park during the draft, usually at the end of the draft, depending on how dependent your team is on your park choice. There is only one PNC, so if you need to play there, make sure you get it, as drafting parks measns a unique stadium for each player. In ATG there are many park choices with duplicate dimensions, so you can usually pick it last.
