BACK TO 1985 - Finals - London Knights win championship!

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Postby albert2b » Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:28 am

Uh-oh. Looks like the Fat Lady (no relation to my Fat Boys :) ) is loosening up her vocal cords. We needed to take at least 2 out of 3 from the division leading Breakers last night in order to control our own destiny heading into the last couple of series. Now it looks like we'll need help from the Breakers, Hakers and Bums, as my only realistic chance is the wildcard.

This has been a frustrating season for me in many ways. In the beginning of the year, I had a feeling I didn't have the horses to compete, but I held out hope that we would get some luck with the mystery card. Turns out we had [i:2cafd3ea3e]some[/i:2cafd3ea3e] decent cards, but nothing to put me over the hump. We made some trades during the year, but none of them worked out as planned.....including getting what looked like Sutcliffe's 1984 card for the 2nd consecutive season. I guess the man just cannot pitch in the bright lights of Yankee Stadium (i.e. Ed Whitson/Jeff Weaver/Steve Trout/Kenny Rogers disease).

Well, I'm not conceding anything yet as I've seen stranger things happen in SOM, but it's not looking good for my 'boys. Regardless, it may be time to re-stock the cupboards anyway. Having all these overachieving guys are nice, but relying on them year after year is no way to go through the decade. Our scouts are already hard at work scouring the 1986 draft class for some REAL talent.

What are the playoffs like?

Postby BC Manager » Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:49 am

My Knights all but clinched the division last night -- in order to win the division, the Canucks would have to win all of their last 6 games, while I lose my last 6 and they would also have to make up a run differential difference of 60 runs in those 6 games just to win a tiebreaker. Hope I didn't just jinx myself.

Looking to forward to seeing who London will face in the semi's. Looks like the Breakers, so far, which would be an intriguing series. Good luck to everyone still hanging in the remaining races.

It is good to be back in the play-offs again. Should be a great post season.
I am travelling in Bordeaux for the next few days and then on to Verona, so my on-line availabilty is going to be sporadic.

Oh well. Got eliminated on the last day of the season, so I suppose that's all I could ask for in this trying season. It turned out to be a close 3 team race for the wildcard. Had Luis Leal showed up for game 161 last night, we may have snuck in there. However, us taking 2 out of 3 from the Murphs opened the door for Sean's Mango Men to control their own destiny, but they dropped 2 out of 3 to the last place Bums to fall out of contention themselves and allowed Syke's Murphs to claim the last spot. It felt like an uphill climb all year and we were never quite able to get over the top. That resulted in our lowest win total of the decade :(

On a bright note, George Brett finished 4 triples shy of being the first 30-30-30 (2B, 3B and HRs) man in BTT80's history. That would've been a pretty amazing feat.

Good luck to all the playoff teams and HURRY UP so we can get 1986 started  :D

End of a long and frustrating season for me. The only team I could beat on a regualr basis were BCs London Knights, obviously not enough to have success. Only one season after my world championship destiny struck back. Looking forward to next seson with a high draft pick in round one. :)

Considering I'm in the bottom 4 again, I'll post my state for the Pick 3 for the 1st round of the draft.

1. Mav - CA

I want to wish the four teams in the playoffs the best of luck.

I also want to thank Albert for pointing out the Mango Men's inability to control their own destiny, dropping 2 of 3 to the last place Bums. Thanks Albert, for that little news flash

Here's some interesting stats, now that Mr. Gorman Thomas is retiring:

Season 1: 54 HR, 157 RBI, .277BA, .579SLG, .335OBP, 119 Runs

Season 2: 47 HR, 123 RBI, .266BA, .560SLG, .358OBP, 103 Runs

Season 3: 35 HR, 93 RBI, .282BA, .529SLG, .361OBP, 102 Runs

Season 4: 42 HR, 114 RBI, .241BA, .498SLG, .328OBP, 97 Runs

Season 5: 66 HR, 149 RBI, .275BA, .659SLG, .379OBP, 137 Runs

AVG: 49 HR, 127 RBI, .268BA, ..565SLG, ..352OBP, 112 Runs

Does a guy with these kind of numbers REALLY have to wait for five years to be inducted into the hall of fame? Pretty impressive. I've used Gorman alot in other leagues, but NEVER had this kind of production. He will be sorely missed in 1986 by the Mango Men and their fans.

who else has 5 consecutive years from a player that stack up to Gorman? Let's see 'em !!
