It doesn't always translate, but I really like the UZR stat on fangraphs.com. It basically measures how many runs are "produced" with a guy's defense, with a positive value indicating more. They break it up into range, errors, double plays, and arm (for OFs). I wish it was used even more by the SOM folks to determine defensive ratings.
I think HanRam undeservedly had a 2 in 2009 with a very pedestrian UZR150 (expected UZR in 150 games played) of -0.1. For reference among SSs, Jack Wilson led the league with a UZR150 of 22.7 and Elvis Andrus was second at 13.5. Both had particularly high values for range. In 2010, HanRam's UZR150 plummeted to -12.4 with a low range value. Can't forget that game or two he got benched for lack of hustle. That certainly can't help his case ...
