Time to reevaluate

Postby ADRIANGABRIEL » Fri Oct 14, 2005 3:07 pm

I did a (very) brief analysis of my one title team. It was the first time I had ever used Scott Sanderson or Joe Dimaggio.

Clearly, that's a lethal combination. I haven't tried it since and I haven't won a title. Coincidence? I think not.

Of my finished teams here are the results. My overall mean is 87-75.

Park # seasons mean wins playoff appearances
Dunn 15 87 8
Forbes 11 91 10
Fenway 67 9 86 4
Griffith 8 89 5
Candlestick 6 89 4
Baker 5 88 3
Polo 5 85 3
Fenway 86 4 92 4
Yankee 56 4 89 4
Oakland 73 3 91 2
Dodger 65 3 89 2
Huntington 2 87 2
11 other parks 1 season each 84 6

I'll just post a few players:

# seasons mean team wins
Wills 19 87
Bowa 13 87
Mays 15 88
Banks 15 84 !
Speaker 15 90
Cobb 11 88

Two other mystery CF's teams avg 91 wins each.
One mystery firstbaseman's teams avg 93 wins each.
One mystery 3Bman teams average 93 wins each.

Looks like I've overrated Mays a tad. Banks doesn't seem to be on winning teams despite averaging almost 60 hrs. per season.

Wills and Bowa are dead average for my teams. I guess they are priced right.

Re Hack Wilson's old argument. Speaker does seem to outperform Cobb at least with this small sample.

Very Cool. :)

I really like the mystery players, sometimes we give away just a little too much info. :D

After I retire at the end of the month I'll go through and do likewise. The mystery players wouldn't be Pendleton and Hernandez by chance would they? :)

OK, I just had to look. Went through my championship teams, and uncovered some very peculiar things...

1) OK, this is almost beyond belief. I've had 9 championship teams; I've had 9 different 2B on those teams. Here's the list...
Doran(!), Schoendienst, Whitaker, Fox, Gehringer, D. Johnson(!), Morgan, E. Collins, Gordon. Granted a couple of those are theme leagues, but that's still weird.

2) 2 pitchers show up 5 times. Dizzy Dean, and... Clem Dreisewerd. Vance(!) and Osinski(!) are the only ones who show up 4 times.

3) 3 position players show up 4 times. Speaker (Mays has 2), Larry Gardner, and... Riggs Stephenson! I would have sworn that I hadn't used him 4 times, much less won 4 championships with him. Strange that Cuyler is often a #1 pick, while Stephenson goes undrafted... I just don't think there is THAT much difference between them. I think we get a little blinded by the difference in speed and throwing arms, and overlook all that offense.

Not being blind, that's why I always try to draft him. The bonus is, Kiki gives you "all that offense" as well.

Add a Briggs to my list. There was a few new players, for me, that got a ring. :D

My Data - 12 Chanmpionships

Postby gkhd11a » Sat Oct 15, 2005 7:08 am

I hold no secrets I'll give it away to anyone:
Starting Pitchers

Eddie Rommell - 11 WAY UNDERPRICED
Kid Speer - 6
Jack Pfeister -5
Pete Alexander -4
Babe Adams - 4
Marius Russo - 4
Little Pete Hughson - MM Curse works I've had him many time 1 ring

Relief Pitchers:

Will McEnaney -6
Doug Sisk - 6
Horacio Pina -6
Ken Dayley -4
Dave Giusti -4

Must be most overated relief pitcher Tippy Martinez I've had on over 20 teams 1 ring.
Biggest surprise - Howie Camintz on many of my teams only 2 championships

Lineup
C- Rick Dempsey 6 (3 other catcher)
1B - Frank Chance 6 (4 other 1b)
2b Johnny Evers 6 (6 other 2b)
SS- Honus Wagner 8 (5 others)
3B - None over 4
OF1 - Joe Jackson 5
OF2 - Bob Meusel 9
CF - Cesar Geronimo 7

Comments:
Joe Jackson - I' dont get him 5/12's of time I get him maybe 1 in 4 so obviously great value
Honus Wagner I try for him every time about % time I have him
Johnny Evers - I do not get him 1/2 the time another great value
Bob Meusel - Best outfielder in game for the money I probably have him about that % tho
Cesar Geronimo - Say what you want about arms I think they are important Larry Doby on 3 teams
Rick Dempsey - another defensive specialist shows to me catcher defense vastly underrated although I have Carter a lot and did not win that many rings (3)

Most overrated in my opinion from this study Terry Pendleton I have had him on many, many teams yet he made only 2 championships. His double plays he hits into must really hurt

Ty Cobb -2
Babe Ruth -1
Willie Mays -1
Kiki Cuyler - 1
Ozzie Smith - 0
Jerry Koosman 1 team one championship :D

Therefore a cinch championship team must be:
Alexander
Pfeister
Adams
Russo
Kid SPeer
Eddie Rommell
McEnaney
Sisk
Pina
Dayley

Dempsey
Chance
Evers
Wagner
Doesn't matter
Meusel
Geronimo
Jackson

total 75.37 leave 4.73 for 5 scrubs (2.5) lleaving 2.2 million for 3B just don't take the obvious choice Terry Pendleton! I would go with a Riggs platoon I think
