Worst (Defensive) outfield ever.

Worst (Defensive) outfield ever.

Thought I'd restart this thread from the old boards and give an update.

I wanted to see what would happen If I put halfway decent pitching and good (excellent!) infield defense together with absolutely atrocious OF defense.

Introducing---

Mr. Hack Wilson in CF, Mr. Hank Greenberg in LF, and Mr. Charlie Keller in RF.

The team started out 1-8 and I was thrust into a deep depression. They have rebounded nicely, though..

Hanging on to first place and a winning record. Much better than I expected, being the defensive-oriented player I am.

Not sure how to analyse the data, since I don't generally analyse the data (save that for the Bbrools and treyomos of the world). :D Don't really know how to break down the cards to X-chances,and whatever they frequently talk over my head about.

My card-rating system is really very simple--
Pitching- [b:96b838e34f]BOLD[/b:96b838e34f] = bad
Hitting- [b:96b838e34f]BOLD[/b:96b838e34f] = good

Maybe infield defense is more important than OF defense? My layman's conclusion. :D

This is such a strange team for me. I certainly would not have guessed this were a Germaniac/Biermeister pitching staff, that's for sure. Pete is saving the day.

I am also too lazy and intellectually dishonest to actually review statistical analysis, but if you check out my thread above regarding my Hands of Stone theme team, you will see reference to my Beatles and Georges theme teams as well. The pitching on these teams was atrocious, although neither team played in a park I would consider extreme for hitting. They both suffered from sub-optimal fielding at SS, however, and the Georges had pretty bad fielding at 2B as well. Neither team won 70 games. I think that fielding at the SS position is key, and the DP combo in general much more important than the outfield, which you would expect from cursory inspection of the cards, where the SS X is the most frequent one rolled. Also, the DP combo produces..... DP's!!..which the OF does rarely. The advantage of DP's requires no elaboration. However, I am beginning to perceive advantage disproportionate to what I expected from having a strong throwing arm in center field, more from my Netplay experience, and experience with my Odyssey Tigger theme team, where I have Geronimo in CF.

Final report from this team. As referenced in a few other posts, they ended up winning 83 games, in a 3-way tie for first in the division, and 4-way tie for the WC. Didn't win the tiebreaker

I have no numbers to back this up, but I'm sure that if I had even decent defense in the OF, with some relatively decent offensive production, I would have won at least 10 more games. Oh, well, it was my experiment, and I stuck to it, hard as it was. :)

Neither Greenberg nor Wilson put up overwhelmingly good offensive numbers that would justify my using them again in anything other than a DH role, although I may consider using Hank if he is paired with a Dawson/D. Dimaggio in CF and a Meusel/Clemente/Furillo/Cuyler/Valentine etc. in RF. I'll definitely use Keller again, but of course only in LF where he belongs!

In any case, it was an incredible race to the end, and a fun league to be in.

I just have to think- one more game is all it would have taken...

Some veery high-level analysis. Just looking at my pitchers ERA, in Royals Stadium, they are all at least 1 run higher than I would expect from those guys, based on previous experience (except Pete). This leads me to believe that an awful lot of runs were scored on balls that perhaps the OF simply didn't get to. Not errors, just crappy range, leading to quite a few extra runs.

my thoughts exactly, the ERA for that staff in that park is way out of whack

with a decent OF figure a run per game less

with Clemente/Mays/Meusel, maybe 2 runs per game less

I've got a different staff in Royals Stadium, but a pretty good one, with Clemente/Mays/Meusel and they're not faring much better:

Oops. Try it now. My starters aren't as park dependent, but still I'd have thought they'd fare a little better in that park with that outfield. IF D is just OK, but certainly not awful.

my 2 cents - again

I'd take MM's staff over yours in a heartbeat

You IF defense isn't close to MM's

so....your ERA wasn't the OF's fault :)
