Ethics Question

Yes, I realize that a lawyer asking an ethics question is a bit of an oxymoron, but here goes:

I recently got my son-in-law hooked on ATGII. His first team is horrible. I have given him another credit and want to be in a public league with him. I would make sure we are not in the same division, and would not trade any players to him, but would help him set up his draft and waivers, and would give him some advice during the season.

My question is, if I disclosed this to the other players in the league, do you think they would consider this as unfair, or cheating? I would never consider taking advantage of this to improve my chances, but being in the same league I would be able to help him almost every day.

What do you think?

Only speaking for myself, of course, but I can't imagine having any problem with that. Disclosure before the league starts is a very good idea.

I see no problems. Should be fun actually I think you should try and get in the same division with him. That way you'll pay more games against each other!

I've done the family thing a number of times, my brothers and also nephews have played 3-4 leagues. We ususally try to let everyone know up front and we try to stick the kids in one division. I like the head-to-head with my brothers, so we are in the same division.

I see no problem with this approach, just let everyone know.

As this is done using HAL and on the web, there are not as many fights as when we were kids playing strat .... :lol:

Actually one of the things you are proposing I do find somewhat unethical and that is helping him with his draft card. Once two owners work together on draft cards they have improved their chances not to conflict on players at the draft and therefore give each other a better chance at getting the players they want.

I don't see any issue playing with friends or family as long as the teams are run seperately. Helping with the draft and waiver cards blurs that independence.

Actually, I plan to help him draft the best team possible. My team will be secondary but I will make the best team I can without conflicting with his choices. Also, he will not see who I am choosing. Mainly, I am going to help him focus his choices on players he wants, but that can give him a successful team in ATGII, and fit the ballpark and style (pitching, basher or balanced) that he wants to try.

I would agree with bbrool that the draft may be a perceived issue....

What might be better than helping fill out the card.....condensing knowledge formerly available via search, like here's a list of value SPs, these RPs are overpriced, here's a list of must have 2Bs because there aren't 12 to fill a league, Doran sucks, recap the Crosetti/Bush/Sacco/Vanzetti affari.....all general advice on players and positions should be OK.

Like an assessment of his first team, and ID things done well and mistakes made may be a great help.

I think that is Bbrool's point. If you make your picks to not conflict with his, that is a conflict of interest.

That being said, I would not have a problem with it because it sounds like your intentions are fully on the up and up.

There are many leagues that have a father/son ,friends , relatives in them . I wouldn't see any problem at all with helping someone on a relatively early strat career . If you come to the boards for help , isn't it just about the same thing as helping someone make a better team ? No worries Geez ! :)
