1969 game---any opinions/WWII Flicks (fun thread)

One not shown as frequently, but an excellent WW2 flick, is The Iron Cross. A late 70's release, with James Coburn playing a German soldier on the Russian front. James Mason and Maxmillian Schell co-starred. Check it out.

Patton is the classic of course.

I suggest A Bridge Too Far, based upon Corny Ryan's book about operation Market Garden and the Brits disaster at Arnhem. Monty just left his paratroopers to get cut up, 10,000 dropped in, less than 3,000 came out. Great cast, good flick, pretty accurate.

Somehow this got away from 1969 season and to WWII flicks. I really like "The Longest Day", although "Saving Private Ryan" is more realistic, and I liked "Battle of the Bulge". I really liked "In Harm's Way", a John Wayne Naval movie.

Some of you remember that in 1969 we didn't need war movies -- we saw Vietnam live every night on TV from the news. I originally thought that war was "glorious" because of all my readings on the Civil War and the war movies from the 50s and 60s, but seeing the blood and horror on the nightly news cured me of that stupidity.

I haven't played 1969 yet, even though I am a great Senators' fan, but I am struggling to figure out how to build a team, since there is little, if any, defense, mostly low BA and OBP, and the pitching looks studly (there were 15 20-game winners, and there are at least 25 pitchers with ERAs under 2.50). I'm itching to try it out, but can't convince myself yet.

"Iron Cross" would come recommended by me. Another sleeper that wasn't all bad was I believe called "Breakthrough," with Robert Mitchum as the good guy American and Richard Burton as the good guy German. Another classic is PT-109. I just wonder where they got all the PT boats they used? I don't believe they kept any for surplus.

I currently have one team. They are in first place...though I don't know how...

Loads of pitching.....very little OPB & defense. Those that are used to having a stud at every position had better stick to ATGII. If you are up to a real challenge of your managerial skills, then you'll like the smaller player pool. The initial draft is extremely important. Good luck tryin' to find anything on the FA wire.....

My wife gave me the DVD set "Band of Brothers". story of course of Easy Company 506 PIR in WWII. D-Day, Carentan, Market Garden, Bastogne all the way to Berchtesgaden. Highly recommend it, very real and factual. The scene where Major Winters is interviewed by General Taylor (I assume so, cannot recall that it was Taylor for sure) to be re-assigned to the pacific is a classic.

Glorify war? Hardly. Recognize, appreciate and understand the incredible history, heroic characters and amazing stories of that period, that's what it is about for me.

A notable mention should be "All Quiet on the Western Front." Another excellent movie. I rented "Band of Brothers" from blockbuster. Great series! Another very well done movie and more recently released was a story of Hitler's last few days in the bunker just before the fall of Berlin. I think it was just called "Downfall." Sub-titled but excellent!
