Lineup help in Polo Please!!!

Postby sschu » Fri Oct 21, 2005 12:01 pm

We all know of course that there is more than one way to win at this game!

Clearly Morgan does more for teams than the box score indicates and slugger teams need OBP. At the same time, high OBP can be less-expensively acquired than via Morgan IMHO. I would suggest a Keller/Gordon or a Cleon/Gordon combo for about $12M is a better value than Morgan and the $1.5M left over. But that is just my opinion.

Furthermore, Morgan was not really helping this team that much, his stats were:

.250 BA
.416 SLG
.379 OBP
31SB/13 CS

In addition, the team was performing very poorly vs LHs:

.248 BA
.445 SLG
.329 OBP
only 5.41 RPG for a near zero SP team
only 1.83 HR / game
5 games under 500 at game 90

As he had Keller, fulfilling the need for a good lead-off OBP player, not sure why moving out Morgan is considered such a travesty?

won 2-3 last nite, mr Gordon is off to a great start! 2 hrs in 6 games, 350 ba, 700 slugging, 435 obp...early, but happy so far....

York has been another matter....lousy so far, but again, early.....

I agree that to take a 20% hit on a big salary is normally unwise, and I am very reluctant to do so...on the other hand, I usually find that the ONLY way to make any significant changes are to drop your big $$ dud at times...does not always help, but to drop a 4-5 mill player almost never makes any diff.....

I did learn something tho, I drafted keller and morgan, so I would have two GREAT obp guys in front of all my studs, but as sschu states, it does seem, at least in this experiment, that one opb guy, followed by a ton of sluggers is a better recipe....sigh.....live and learn!!

Appreciate your opinion Roosky, and it is sound, as I rarely make moves in season....however, in this case, I thought the merits of the move were pretty good, and as I was floundering a bit, went ahead and did so! What the heck, makes for good conversation, and who knows, time may show that it was the right thing to do....(I sure hope so..... :) )

Very nice...could you perhaps post a couple of those, so we can maybe "learn" something?? :)

Roosky is someone I listened to all the time on advice for bomber teams. Him and OT seem to do quite well with that strategy. I usually wimp out and get some relief pitching on my bomber teams, but I have one in Polo right now doing alright.
In your specific example, I would have gone with Powell over York, for no reason other than I blindly think Boog is better. :D

Well Boss, went with York because I was a bit light in slugging vs lefties...my first time with him, but have seen him do very well for others!

When the season started, I could have taken Murray or Powell, went with Murray because I had never used him....wish I had taken powell!!

Nice teams! That Fenway team really rocked, I'll bet it was a great team to watch! Great seasons and teams, congrats.

Here's what I do not get. I did the same analysis with Roosky's Fenway team, here are the numbers:

vs RH
OBP 0.463
SLG 0.484
OPS 0.947
HR 4.9
PBHRs 46
vs LH
OBP 0.439
SLG 0.433
OPS 0.871
HR 3.0
PBHRs 46

Here is MT's team numbers B4 dropping Morgan.

OBP vs RH 0.430
SLG vs RH 0.490
OPS vs RH 0.920
HR Rate vs RH 5.7
BPHR vs RH 52
OBP vs LH 0.438
SLG vs LH 0.499
OPS vs LH 0.937
HR Rate vs LH 4.9
BPHR vs LH 52

All in all, not that different, and against LHs MT's team is clearly better.

Roosky's team averaged over 7.5 RPG and MT's team was averaging about 5.5 RPG. Roosky's team played in a division with a Forbes, Stick and Comiskey 19 including TF BRown, Pete and Pfiester.

Explanations?

Part of this is due to fenway, and the ob% of my team equals a lot of runs created. Also a lot of team speed on my team as far as running the bases go.

Yes, Polo is going to have a lower OBP, my experience is the difference attibutable to the park is worth maybe 20 points. Mathmatically it would be 5 / 108 * 19/20 for Fenway or 8/20 for Polo for 50% of the rolls or about 10 extra OBP points.

MTs team actually has a bit higher average speed, 15.1 vs 14.9.

It seems to me the biggest differences are:

1. Fenway OBP advantage

2. Extrordinary performances by Bush, Reggie, Berra, Mantle and Murray

3. Higher OBP on cards, especially vs RHs.

I think there may be some advantage to increasing OBP over BPHRs for slugging teams, I'll keep that in mind the next time I give one a go. Nice team, wish all mine would hit like that!

Thanks for the links, sschu
