HEY EXPERTS - PLATOON QUESTION FOR YA

Postby amitdoc2b » Tue Jul 04, 2006 7:48 pm

Hi!

Suppose I have 3 players: A, B, C.

"A" plays left field and has an injury rating of 5.

"B" plays center field and has an injury rating of 5.

"C" is on the bench, and is a backup for both "A" & "B" since he can play both left and centerfield.

My question is:

-Suppose "A" gets injured and "C" substitutes for him. Is it possible for "B" to get injured during that period of time since his ONLY backup on my bench was C as well?

-And if "B" CAN get injured, then what would happen in my game since there is nobody to play for him?

Thanks so much.

yes. It doesnt matter if you have a backup or not, they can get injured. I'm not sure if 2 catchers can get injured but the answer to your question is yes.

If you don't have any available catchers except the one currently playing, your catcher will not get hurt. This is the only position this applies to. At all other positions, HAL will stick someone in a vacated position and just consider him a 5e88 or whatever the worst rating is for that position.
With catchers: I have heard of someone having both catchers in the game at the same time (one catcher was eligible at 1B and was playing there, for example), then having the guy catching get hurt and HAL brought an unqualified player off the bench in to sub at catcher. However, the next game, HAL moved the first basemen with catcher eligibility to catcher and filled in first base with someone from the bench that could play there. Again, though, if you START the game with only one catcher-eligible player healthy, that guy will not get hurt.

yes there is a block in their system that prevents both catchers from being hurt...............

Good to know when your one back up is say a lefty killer with a high injury rating.

HAL's switching the second catcher (playing 1B) over to play behind the plate only after the end of the game in which the injury happened is true. However, if you've got that second catcher in the DH slot, HAL will not. I'm carrying a third cheapo catcher in an 80s league at present, because both of my first two are in my lineup, one in the DH slot. Lost games because of a backup infielder catching for the better part of three games one night.

1 catcher Strategy

So, Does it make sense to draft one catcher only who was injury prone, yet put up solid stats when he played? If I understand correctly, this guy would play all season and not be hurt. What am I missing?

Have to draft two catchers according to the rules. If one gets injured then the other can not get injured while the first one is out.

If your #1 catcher carries a high injury risk, you should probably devote more $$ to your backup than you perhaps ordinarily would. Having to go with a terrible backup during a 15 game injury stretch can really hurt, especially if that #1 guy was important to your slugging, etc.

As far as the rest of the positions go, having a single decent OF-eligible bench player should be avoided because of situations like that. More commonly, you'll find that several infielders have bad ratings for LF or RF, and one of them will get inserted. This may happen even with a better defensive option on the bench, as HAL's default setting appears to be to throw the bench player in with the highest slugging...something I understand TSN is working on (giving us the ability to set defensive replacement lists for each position). But for now, if a player is to be gone for several series, you may need to specifically change your lineup to put an appropriate defensive player in place in your lineup, or else HAL may do something that strikes you as bizarre...wouldn't be the first time!
