69 LIVE DRAFT - 80 Mil w/ DH - FULL !

Our historical single season sets

Nashville Skyline, huh? I guess you are hoping that Bob Dylan's success as a manager in the Iron Range League will carry over here. :D

As a Cardinals fan, I assure you the first-round choice of Seaver was not at all driven by personal preferences. For $3 million less than Gibson, however, he seemed like the much better deal. Not having played 1969 before, perhaps Seaver's card tends not to live up to his real-life performance.

TT was one of only two twenty game winners in my only 69 league.

Fregosi...

Postby TomSiebert » Sat Dec 03, 2005 3:48 pm

....put a lot of thought into this one. With Petrocelli gone, he was the only other SS I saw who could field pretty well AND had N-power from both sides. I mean, Menke does, but do you really want a 3e32 at the most key fielding position? Then add the fact he's got 600+ PA and decent OBA and it seemed too tempting to wait...the dropoff after Fregosi isn't quite as big as the drop from Rico to Fregosi, but it's still significant enough for him to be a differentiating presence....leaving my fave player to languish, perhaps for a couple more rounds :(

I winced when I saw that choice, but only because I remember Fregosi as a Met.

I would have argued for Luis Aparicio -- same fielding, slight drop in OPS offset by an A stealing rating, and a million dollars cheaper. But it's a good safe pick. There are significant dropoffs at both SS and C after the highest-rated players are taken.

Aparicio

I liked Luis as a player -- didn't he win gold gloves? If he was a 1 on defense, it might have been a different story....but the W-power vs. RH pitching was the deal-breaker...Only one other team (you, the Knights) will have a SS who can field and hit for power.

Aparicio won nine Gold Gloves; only Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel have won more among shortstops. Mark Belanger and Don Kessinger won the Gold Gloves at the position in 1969.

Stargell, by the way, was one of the players I admired beside Aaron, and Bonds was one of the players I met (he was at a golf tournament at a hotel I was staying at in 1994, and I got completely tongue-tied upon meeting him; didn't think to get his autograph either). The other two players I've met are still available.

Dang, I was hoping Carty would drop further.

Rico Carty was my next pick. What a bargain! Other than he can't field and can only play one position. I know he won the batting title in one 1969 league....

Also, I'm surprised there are NO 1-rated SS's at all. I would have bet money that Belanger was a 1.
