One More Reason to Love HAL

Postby J-Pav » Tue Jun 19, 2007 12:12 am

Opening night, bottom of the 8th inning, tie score at 1. Lefty SP Johan Santana loads the bases before walking (4R) Mike Lowell and blowing the game. Santana leaves the field in obvious shame. Fitty-nine cent reliever Scott Cassidy warms up and takes the hill. Lowell (steal rating [b:5f8856ce8e]E[/b:5f8856ce8e]) is so excited about his (what will turn out to be the game winning) walk, that he is picked off of first base (errr, caught stealing) with no outs, the bases loaded and the 9-1-2 hitters coming up in a one run game.

I guess he was a threat to get too far to second and possibly be in a position to score the potentially dealbreaking [i:5f8856ce8e]fifth[/i:5f8856ce8e] run of the game for me.

How could Lowell attempt a steal if he's on 1B and the bases are loaded? Taguchi, the guy on 3B, was the one caught stealing; this had to be a suicide squeeze that failed. Although I can't say I would have called this play myself, it's not the worst idea in the world; the batter (Lopez) would be a B bunter with bases loaded & infield back, and Cassidy is actually very good against lefties.

That's right ... it wasn't Lowell that was caught. The runner at third (3-o) was called out on the steal attempt.

Good call, that makes sense. I was going with the rare play dice roll "hidden ball trick" but a failed squeeze is a little easier to digest. It's hard to analyze these things at one in the morning!

Thx guys.

Hey J-Pav, the "do not steal setting" has been upgraded and now actually works, I would recommend using it.
