Strat/ATG Irony

Strat/ATG Irony

I find it ironic that ATG includes cards for guys like Doc Prothro and Joe Evans when Strat did not give these guys cards in the original sets. Now it isn't that I don't enjoy seeing these 2 cards, I truly do, but here is the ironic part:

Many, many years ago when Harold Richman was pressed for an answer as to why Strat did not include Prothro and Mathews on the 24 Senators team .....his reply; (and this is not a direct quote) He was worried that people would over use Prothro, since he hit .333, and was far better than Tom Taylor, who hit .260 but only had 73 AB's, but got a strat card. I believe this may have been quoted in one of the very earliest Strat Fans.
I was quite incensed at the time over this.

A similar thought process was used when Willard Hershberger who had 123 AB's was not given a card, but Jimmie Wilson who had 37 AB's was for the 40 Reds team.

So this brings us to ATG where we can now use a player aany way we wish. Oh the pain

I don't think it is possible to logically explain which cards make it in which versions. I always thought it was strange that Hal Newhouser got an ATG card in 1954 when Don Mossi pitched twice as many innings with a better ERA, and a better WHIP. It's hard to say that Mossi was unrealistically good when he pitched 93 innings. I figured that it was a result of Newhouser's Hall of Fame career. Mossi also pitched more innings than Ray Narleski who got an ATG card. In the dark recesses of my memory, I think all three had cards in the board game.

Newhouser did not have a strat card in the original game which makes it more inexplicable why he would be represented in ATG and not Mossi.
Even more so based on the facts you mention!
