[quote:7aceff50da="franky35"]right, I missed that Cubs have only 4 SP. Anybody know what happened in 69 that they had so few starters?[/quote:7aceff50da]

It looks like that's what they went with. Scrub Rich Nye made 5 starts for them but strat has him as RP only. Anyone else has less than 20 IP.

1969 Cubs: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/1969.shtml

Looks like Rudolph was the backup catcher. Pretty much a donkey.

They could have made Rich Nye a starter, he had 5 starts. Joe Niekro had 3 starts but was traded to the Padres for Selma.

You beat me to it by a minute, Jett!

Must've been my extensive catcher analysis.

Is this a vote just for the Cubs?

Postby franky35 » Wed Feb 06, 2008 5:45 pm

toshiro, I can't vote on that because it isn't clear what the rules will be. Is this a vote just for the Cubs?

Or are we voting on whether any team can make as many free agent substitutions that they want (as long as the free agent is 0.50 or 0.99)?

Or that only some teams (currently unspecified) are allowed to make some number of free agent pick ups (also unspecified)?

I have no recollection of Rich Nye. I always picture Joe Niekro in that yellow-rainbow Astros uniform, I can't see him as a Cub.

Well, Jett posted the vote, not me. But this is what he said:

[quote:c83e2f79b0]In order to make the 60M sal cap, we need to decide how teams OVER the cap get to it and how teams missing positions fill those spots.

Obviously, the player pool of fillers will be from the teams not chosen.

[/quote:c83e2f79b0]

So I'm assuming his intent was to apply the rule to ALL teams over 60mil, not just ChC.

For my part, if it's limited to .50 players strictly, I think that will have a built in moderating effect. People aren't going to go hog wild with the swap outs if they can only get .5 guys. But if they can downgrade an RP to one of those .90 Sea RPs or get an Egan or Crawford and build a platoon, the temptation may be there to use substitute as a regular or semi-regular, which should not be done.

I'd be willing to let ChC have an SP up to $1mil, myself, but all others should be .50 mil (in my book). (Incl a .50 backup catcher for ChC)

DETROIT - $67.48 GROSS

Postby pacoboy » Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:28 pm

I plan on making the following drops to comply:

1 - Drop Kilkenny $4.45 for $0.50 Pitcher = net -$3.95
2 - Drop Prince $1.09 Catcher for $0.50 catcher = net -$0.59
3 - Drop Ike Brown $0.57 for a $0.50 bum hitter = net -$0.07
4 - Drop Al Kaline $2.87 to cut down to 14 hitters = net -$2.87

Total Net cuts = $7.48 to get to $60 mil on the nose.

3 Bums added who will never help my team and I make the same drops as those lucky / early teams with 17 players

This is in the spirit of the league, over budget teams should do the same
