Astrodome team; I have the good fortune to play in a division with all pitcher parks.

Right now I have:

LF Shoeless
CF Speaker
3B Rolfe
1B Gehrig
RF Ennis
C O'Neill
2b Fox
SS Concepcion

SPs: Boyd, Lolich, Nolan, Ceccarelli, B. Johnson
RPs: Staley, Wyatt, Fosnow

I have a little money in the bank. I could trade in Nolan for Stange, or Concepcion for Aparicio. I also wonder if my lower lineup is a little weak. I've thought about moving Fox to leadoff, changing Jackson for Furillo and having him bat 6th. That would also improve my RF defense. But, of course, at the cost of trading in a great leadoff hitter.

Musial is also out there--for the moment. Not sure I could swing him without significantly downgrading other areas.

Any comments appreciated. I'm feeling a little rusty these days.

My 2 cents worth:

Although Gehrig is my altime favorite player, he is simply too expensive for what he gives you in a pitchers park (and division). I would downgrade to Musial or someone else and upgrade SS. You would get an almost equivalent performance from Musial as Gehrig, for a LOT less money.

For the most part, I think you are right on target for a good season. Personally, I don't worry much about finding power hitters for the Astrodome. Gehrig will hit a ton for you, but if it was my team, I'd downgrade him to Hernandez/Chance/Judge/Luderus, upgrade Ennis to Furillo and spend what's left on starting pitching.

If Gehrig is your reason for having this team, then downgrade others to raise that same money.

I like Boyd, Lolich and Nolan, but I'd only have all three of them on an Astrodome staff if Alexander was my fourth. At the least, I'd like three guys in the Bob Gibson neighborhood to go with any one of your three (in other words, a minumum of $20 on your rotation).

But that's just me. In any event, I think you'll have fun with this team.

I just dropped Gehrig for Musial and upgraded to this rotation: Hughson, Boyd, Kaat, Lolich. Good move to make? I now have a couple mil to play with.

I'm in your division Tom and can't make up my mind on my team, but I'd swap Gehrig for Musial and Concepcion for Trammell. My .02 :?

Tom,

This similar team recently won a title for me:

Agree with Nev. Good moves with Musial and the pitching.

Not sure why you want Ennis?

Don't like your lineup choices.

I wouldn't bat Fox so low nor leadoff Jackson.

Perhaps something like...
Rolfe
Fox
Speaker
Musial
Jackson
Better right fielder
O'Neill
Concepcion

I hate double plays out of the 2 and 3 slots. Ennis of course can give anyone a run for their money for leading the league in DP's. And why waste his ballpark hr's in a pitchers division? I'd consider Medwick an upgrade in your circumstances despite his cheaper price.

I used to like O'Neill but have grown less fond of him over time. Cochrane would be better if available but would probably take Sanguillen or even Battey over him. O'Neill hits OK but didn't give me the run production for the money. And a 1 vs 2 at catcher is basically meaningless.

Yeah, I agree about O'Neill, but Sanguillen, Cochrane, Battey all gone. I wouldn't mind dropping him. It would put me down to the Gibson/Schalk level, and I wonder if that would make my lower lineup way too weak. I figure O'Neill is at least good for .280, 30+ doubles.

I'm addicted to Ennis, simply because he always gives me 100+ rbis, even in pitcher parks. I could go with Furillo or Valentine instead. I love Medwick in the Dome, but some other enterprising manager in my league already figured that out.

Right now I have Chapman at SS, batting eighth. Never used him before, but definitely seems better than Concepcion.

Hmm ... I'll keep tinkering. Appreciate the help!

Well, whaddaya know ... no sooner did I write that than I see Ducky on the FA list.

Dropped Fosnow for Shoffner, upgraded Chapman to Trammell.

Now I'm here, going with Petrosian's lineup suggestion:

Rolfe
Fox
Speaker
Musial
Jackson
Medwick
Trammell
O'Neill

I could go with this--or drop O'Neill for Gibson and upgrade Medwick to Furillo/Valentine.

Any thoughts?
