Ruth, Williams, who else for a pitcher's park?

My nephew and I put together this team for Griffith 24 and we're two games out of a playoff spot with about 30 to play. We're a long shot because it's a very competitive league, but I'm pretty satisfied. One thing I wish we'd done, though, is get a real home run hitter for this team.

I'd like to go into Griffith again or Forbes 09 for my next ATGII team. But this time I'd like a top slugger to complement the likes of Speaker and Honus. Who's better for a park like this-- Ruth or Ted Williams? Who are some other sluggers who flourish in this no-BPHR environment?

I don't think you want Ruth in Forbes '09. Not sure how Williams would do. Try using Diamond Dope (don't have the link here at work).

Gary Carter tends to hit consistently 30-50 HRs for me in Griffith, although his BA is usually between .250-.270.

Look for someone with natural HRs, not BP HRs. I have great success in Griffith with few sluggers, but a lot of speed, high OBP, and excellent defense. I am usually near the bottom of hitting for the league and near or at the top for pitching.

You might ask Charlie or Odyssey Tigger, both of whom are small-ball gurus.

What about Joe Dimaggio or Hank Aaron

Look on the slugger's cards for natural HRs (the ones without the # next to them), high BA and doubles/triples. It's a good habit to get into.

Also, I'd highly recommend using www.diamonddope.com, using Griffith as your home park and comparing all the hitters you want.

Off the top of my head, the best "sluggers" for Griffith are:

Ruth
Mantle
Gehrig
Hornsby (he hits everywhere!)
Williams
J.Dimaggio
A.Simmons
Mays (he'll hit .260 but will have plenty of dingers and his D is invaluable in Griffith)
Snider (some falloff, but still worth it)
Yount
Greenberg (only if DH)
York
Cooper (might need platoon mate vs. LHP)
F.Alou
Furillo
R.Collins
C.Jones
Cepeda
Money

Sluggers to avoid in pitcher's parks:

Ott
Morgan (Collins, Gehringer, Fox all better options)
Foxx
H.Wilson
Schmidt
R.Jackson
Mathews
Powell
J.Gordon
Bando
McCovey
Rosen

Hope that helps. :)

The best HR hitter for Griffith or Forbes is Gary Carter as he offers superior defense and if you have a small ball team you frequently are stealing bases and he is a good removal from the opposition. next best in my view is Larry Doby as his defense and positive clutch come in very handy from the 5th spot. Both are not too expensive and will not hamper creating a pitching team and help the defense.

Many people have success with Mickey Mantle, who apparently hates me, I dislike using someone who costs so much and can have 1/2 his value whittled by a nickel lefty pitcher. Babe Ruth is only ok in a 100 million league, he simply has too much of his value tied up in BP HR's to be used in an 80 million league unless there are a lot of HR parks in your division.

Willie Mays is probably the best overall choice if you can get him and are willing to use a large portion of your money on one postion. Joe Dimaggio has been used by many, I have never used him as a 15 game risk on a pitching team is too much for a 10 million dollar player for me, but if he has a low injury season he can win a division by himself. ANd if I were to create a hitting Griffith team Ted Williams would be a great addition.

Charlie, you have to try the Clipper!

I have drunk from the cup of Joe and am addicted, and you know I don't say that lightly as he's hitter that costs more than $7 million!

He hits, and hits, and hits, and hits....

Mays sucks for me, he must hate Germaniacs. Never had Mantle, never had Ruth, never had Gehrig, had Williams once waaaay back in ATGI.

I know you want one, PillPop, but you don't NEED a HR hitter on a pitching team in a smallball park. Clemente/Wagner is more than enough slugging in my book. :)

I have to go back to my notes from 2003, I believe my Munich Man instrction manual warns quite strongly of the purchase of a player in excess of 7 million dollars unless he is hurling it towards the man attempting to put the ball in play........................................
