best back-up for Honus

Postby ADRIANGABRIEL » Tue Jan 17, 2006 4:54 pm

I didn't realize until just this moment that Charley O'leary is a 1e75 at SS. Wow. There's a backup for you.

I tend to go with Bancroft, but might rethink that.

I reflexively use Bancroft. Twice I used Crosetti when extra money was available. I'd use Dente or Koenig before I would ever even think about using Lundt who can't hit, run, bunt etc. If Wagner gets injured for a lot of games I generally just dump him.

When used as a defensive substitute Lunte will usually get around 100 AB's and hit from .125 to .173. My experience with him as a late inning sub is to reduce Honus's errors by about 20, which makes him effectively a .325 to .373 hitter for the number of AB's he gets, and those effective hits will come in games Honus is playing where you are winning a higher percentage. Now these will never show in the final stats and will not help a hitting team, since hitting teams frequently stage late inning rallies and a defensive substitution for Wagner would be ill-advised but will greatly aid I believe a pitching team, such as the one you are holding.

I do not think the difference is really that big of a deal but when you have Alexander, Pfeister and Brown every dollar can be crucial in trying to assemble an everyday offense that wins most games by 1 run and Bancrofts offense while no doubt much better than Lunte will come in a majority of losing games (my loss rate when Honus goes down is about 60%) I don't think Bancroft will change that loss rate much and there are much better pinch hitters to get for pinch hitting situations in the outfield arena if that is what is needed.

When I go smallball I often use J. Robinson (1b, 3b) and either Chance, Judge or Steinfeld at the other corner. I usually stay away from Wagner and go with Chapman. They are very productive, but all are 15 game risks. On a team like this, I use Weaver. He covers 3rd and SS and J. rob moves to 1st if needed. (all 3 positions covered) I even platoon Weaver with Judge against hard lefties.

He's worth the extra mil. every time. :)

A very good solution Nev, but why not use Wagner with the same process? With the 15 game injury risks you really have a good solution, Jackie Robinson is obviously a big key.

I usually get less errors with Chapman, usually less time missed because I think his injury roll is on 2 and Honus' on 3 (?) and nice offensive production, and it allows me Weaver at the same cost that Wagner alone would cost me.....Most importantly I do love Wagner but he doesn't perform for me like he does for PJ and yourself......

Chapman, R. 612 [b:fff7c09520]91[/b:fff7c09520] 27 6 [b:fff7c09520]71[/b:fff7c09520] 54 0 31 0[b:fff7c09520].279[/b:fff7c09520] 0.373 0[b:fff7c09520].336 [/b:fff7c09520]Forbes New York Smooth

He's not Wagner (but decent) and he's usually easy to get lower on my card, and sometimes even on the F.A. list.

My latest "Honus experiment" is a team full of injury risks

Cochrane
Driessen
Wagner
Steinfeldt
J Jackson
Furillo
C Jones

E Collins
T Speaker

This is a dh league and I have Oquendo as "the 10th man" to cover for injuries at the corner OF slots as well as SS. Cleon Jones will dh, play some first base etc. Not wildly optimistic but we'll see. Jackson, Cochrane and Speaker all got hurt on opening night.

Honus hit .706 on opening night but I lost 2 of 3.
