I'm new to '86. Question about OBP

Postby uvm87 » Sun Mar 30, 2008 7:15 am

I usually play ATG, where you need 2-4 players with OBP over .400 to field a competitive team. But in the '86 version there are a lot less .400+ hitters to choose. Is this less important? Is there a cutoff at, say .380+, where I need to have as many as posssible? Is there a strategy? Thanks.

I've been having good success in '86 thus far and obp is not the most important thing . I have found that injuries are really piling up for everyone ,all teams . If you field a team where your players are going to be playing instead of riding the bench ,you stand a better chance of winning more. Pitching staffs have been relatively easy to build and a strong pen will help ( ex: I have a pen of Tekulve,Garber,Pleasac,Lefferts,JHowell and they are kickin butt ). Because of the much smaller player pool then strategy IS different imo . Ballparks are also different from ATG . No real Bombers parks . I'll give you some team examples also .

OBP is a good thing but in this game it doesn't rule like in ATG . League OBP is down in all my leagues compared to ATG .

OBP is where it's at

IMO, OBP will lead to a more successful offense. Everyone seems to have the same pitching staff (good, not great), there isn't much disparity in ballparks (compared to ATG at least). The lack of defense at SS & 2b, means having better than league avg. obp will lead to a more successful team.

This is an interesting point.

I view my OBP as relative to the opposing teams not against an absolute number. Players with cards above .375 OBP seem pretty good in the 1986 game, IMHO, and I still consider the .340 OBP hitters as *capable* in this card set. Am I wrong?

5 more sets of league averages

84 games 261/326/412 ($80)
63 games 257/328/426 (Live)
63 games 256/326/416 (Live)
42 games 258/320/420 (Live)
42 games 255/318/392 ($80)

I expected that live leagues have more top end talent than salary cap leagues. Its interesting to note that it *seems* mostly reflected in SLG in this limited sample.

Here's what I got. How'd I do. I made some moves to get Tony Fernandez. He's bullet-proof, so I thought that would help.

I have been very happy with Tony Fernandez.

His numbers match his expectations (309 .334 .407) his defense is better (3 errors in 84 games) and he has scored more runs (64) than anyone in else my lineup although I have had him batting 3rd for quite awhile now.

And, as you noted, he is bulletproof.
