HAL?

Postby Semper Gumby » Thu Feb 09, 2006 9:24 am

He makes the game fun.

With Dave Stieb (+1 hold) pitching and Mickey Tettleton (0 arm) behind the plate, Brett Butler ("Steal More") steals ZERO bases despite plenty of running room [only to be erased via a double play].

However, Mike Schmidt tries for two steals in the same inning and gets tossed wobbling for third.

[b:8f11a8d631]It only gets better[/b:8f11a8d631], Deshaies (-1 hold) and Tettleton (0 arm) combine in their outing to toss out [b:8f11a8d631]4 runners[/b:8f11a8d631] in the next series. This included Brett Butler (AA rated) Wade Boggs ("E" stealer) TWICE :x and old Mike Schmidt.

Hmmm ... HAL must want Tettleton in the Hall of Fame because he sure made him look good that three game series.

AS silly as it sounds, you have to set all of your C,D and E players at don't steal or HAL will do stuff like that. Ive considered doing that to everyone but my AA players and then going to manager settings and set for steal ultra aggresive but then Im afraid HAL will have them attempting to steal home.

Interesting - thought but I can't see why HAL would push Boggs to steal and not Butler / Smith / Daniels.

Heck, I think Schmidt / Boggs have more attempts now that Smith / Butler.

Wacky :?

I have had Jose Oquendo on many of my teams. I always mark him down as do not steal. He attempts 10-15 stolen bases everytime I have him on my team if played on a regular basis. He steals when the overall manager steal is set at normal, he steals when set on aggressive. It doesn't seem to matter who is pitching or catching. He just wants to run. He has been fined so many times by the team he owes the team money at the end of the season.

By the way, I don't believe any of these steal attempts have been hit and run attempts gone bad. I can tell from the attention I pay to the stats.

Another guy that likes to run is Andre "Thunder" Thornton. Pretty humorous.

HAL and SoM Logic - Stolen Bases

Postby Semper Gumby » Thu Feb 09, 2006 12:38 pm

From my CDROM playing days but my understanding of the Manager Strategy settings for steals affects whether the base runner will never attempt a steal unless his safe percentage is at least a given number.

Thus, you could to 70% (= "Aggressive" :?: ), and no attempts would ever be made unless the runner had a 70% or higher safe percentage.

Since I never adjusted the Manager Strategy settings nor locked down Boggs from stealing a base (he is a "E"), the fact HAL launched him twice without a hit and run on is amazing.

Otherwise, he seemed less incline to run either Ozzie Smith and Brett Butler who both are AA w/* runners.

Hmmm ... I go away for my Marine drills this weekend and no posts here since I left on Thursday :(

Of course, I am now stuck in NYC awaiting the snow storm as my clients rescheduled from last week. :x

Good to see that Penn started to drop some of his players

HAL out thunk himself

Postby Semper Gumby » Sun Feb 12, 2006 8:12 am

Working with a two run lead going into the bottom of the 9th, HAL yanks Lee Smith (first appearance in the series) to demonstrate the "percentage game". :x

In the same sweeping logic, he works the other side of the equation and successfully counters his pitching changes and grabs two pinch hitters. No offense to HAL's logic as Kipper had been money vs. RHBs but Lee Smith had been lights out vs. LHBs / RHBs.
[list:fe662cce4f]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 9 ***

SUBSTITUTE P - Gene Nelson
SUBSTITUTE PH- Chris Bando [SUBS FOR PORTER]
0 12 C.Bando 3 Home Run 2-H 1-H b-H [/list:u:fe662cce4f]

I've played long enough to appreciate the odds and luck but when you get beat this way and by C. Bando - it makes you wish that HAL could be dropped for the 95% penalty.
:D
Of course, in the same series Lee pitches another 2 innings to the same part of the line-up.

lol, I will drop more soon :D I have 3 that suck and need to be replaced soon. I either have Smith's worst year or best year. The number point towards the worst year so he is going soon, just waiting to figure out Hrbek and Grubb.

Im a big Bando fan, when you get that one great year. It looks like he probably has that year, that hurts us because we have to see Bando DH against us in our division :(

C. Bando?

My guess - Bando received a gift from the HR Give Away King - G. Nelson.

So far, Nellie has given up just 8 hits out of 29 PAs :D but 3 being HRs. :(
