Gold Gloves

Gold Gloves

I wonder if Michael Young's gold glove will turn into a 1 or a 2 on defense on his new card? I can't imagine that he would stay at a 3 range with his gold glove. I would guess he will go to a 2.

I don't see enough of Young to judge his range, but I do think the Gold Glove voting is kind of a joke. Voters seem to stick with the familiar names...although I'd think that would land a gold glove for Orlando Cabrera instead. Then again, not sure how SOM determines their range ratings anyway... :?

Didn't the gold glove voting prove it was a joke the year Palmiero won at 1B when he was mainly a DH?

I know this much, SOM , the real Hal, and his scouts will not make a guy a 1 just because of a gold glove. That much is very certain. They use as much scouting as statistics. I did not realize Young won. I will have to look at the other winners. A 1 in SOM is more meaningful than a gold glove, as far as how good the guy's fielding really is.

I would venture to say that 90-95% of the GG winners from the last 5 season have been rated as 1's. I can think of Polanco(07) and Grudz(06) that are rated as 2's but nobody elses comes to mind....maybe Pudge?
Anyways...I would say more non-GG winners are rated as 1's that GG winners are rated as 2's...percentage wise.

Abreu won the GG and was upgraded from a 4 to a 3!

So assume winning the GG upgrades you 1 range, so Young from a 3 to a 2 probably.

Young

It wasn't too long ago Young was a real good fielding second basemen at least in HAL's eyes.

If he is a 2 it will be a gift. Young had the worst fielding percentage in the league for starting SS. Most sites that track Baseball stats like range and other fielding efficiencies had him as the 2nd worst fielding SS in the majors, behind Hal's favorite Jeter. A 2 would be a gift!

With all due respect, I disagree.....sort of..... It means more TO ME to be a 1, than to get a GOLD GLOVE. How about Jeter winning gold gloves when he clearly was not the best fielding SS, or a 1? There are many other such cases. Jon McDonald when healthy puts Jeter's fielding to shame! Gold Glove is a popularity contest! To be a 1 in SOM you had better be able to cover some ground! That is just my two cents. I do not even really pay attention to the Gold Gloves, or I am sure I could point out lots of examples of Gold Glove winners not being 1s. Now maybe I am wrong, but I know this for sure, a lot more work goes into SOM range ratings than Gold Glove voting!
