The Red Sox and Yankees have captured 3 of the last 4 MVPs, but only one other players from those two teams has won since 1987 (Mo Vaughn, 1995).
I am still confused about this big market/small market dilemma. The voting isn't done by the average fan. Aren't the people voting on these topics supposed to be the most informed, knowledgable, and experienced sports writers representing each of the major league cities? How can they have such parochial views as to dismiss "small market" players like Morneau and only focus on "large market" players like Pedroia?? :?
If that is really the case, these people need to be relieved of duty. There's no excuse for that kind of bias/ignorance.
Am I the only one who thinks that?

I think AeroDave is trying to say; it should not be that way. But the writers fall prey to their own media hype, and biased leanings. They are after all, human... and therefore very flawed. Before they were sports writers they were fans first. And more of them come from big markets, as opposed to Minnesota. Before they were sports writers they were fans first. And more of them come from big markets, as opposed to Minnesota. As a current player, coach, and fanatic, and someone who watched probably 150 Phils games this year, and every year since about 1990, I would have to disagree with RMilter here. I am not going to argue that Utley is a great fielder, but he is above average, and he certainly is not below average. He positions himself very well and has sure hands. He made many outstanding plays at critical times this year and is a heads up player (proven by his play in the Series when he faked to first on the ball up the middle then gunned the Ray (Gross? Bartlett?) down at the plate). He is aggressive, and never takes plays off. His hustle allows him to get to balls that others may have given up on. I am fine with him being a 3 with a low e total in SOM, but to say he is well below average does him a disservice.
As for Pedroia, I called that with weeks to go in the season, so I am not surprised. In a year with no clear cut offensive powerhouse, I like the choice in rewarding a player who is getting the most out of his talent and who obviously plays with passion. I didn't see a whole lot of the AL, but this choice was at least a justifiable as any of the other contenders. And as a little guy myself (5'7") who was often underestimated as a player, I salute the selection.

True, Utely has decent hands. He may position himself well but that is often due to coaching not instinct. He has below average range is is not very quick turning the dp and has an average arm.

I've got to agree with Smitty's sentiment. Utley's not the best middle infielder on the Phils, but he fields a solid second base. (I am a biased Phils fan).
Speaking of that other middle infielder for the Phils. Didn't we have largely the same discussion last year? Voting is an inexact science.
