To earn a save, besides being the final pitching on a winning team and not the winning pitcher, a pitcher has to [u:515b59c02c]enter[/u:515b59c02c] the game under one of three following conditions:
1. Any lead by his team and pitch at least 3 effective innings
2. A lead of no more than 3 runs and pitch at least 1 inning.
3. Tying run is on base, at bat, or on deck.
Isringhausen qualified for none of these. The lead was three runs, and no one was on base. He would have to pitch at least 1 inning (impossible, given the situation) or he would have to enter with a runner on base (on deck hitter would have been potential tying run).
