What is the fewest dollars you have spent on offense, in an 80 mill league, and won the championship?

Well, I didn't win the championship, but I did win 92 games and lost in game 5 in the semis, so it doesn't fulfill your requirements, but I love to post this team whenever possible-- :D

Anyone else with a low budget offense team that went to the playoffs?

This was my son's team (antilles98). Went to 7 games in the Finals, only to lose to the evil Nevdully. He was up 3 games to 1 at one point, too. :( A team very similar to MM's. Spent a little more on offense than MM did - $19.62m. I told him up front he spent too much on his pen, but the results proved me wrong. Here is the link:

BTW, that E.R.A. for the Eck is a record, I believe. :)

Modmark--
much appreciated, that is an excellent team--thanks for sharing.
I think with teams like that the pen is abso essential, as winning/losing one run games with a cheap offense hinges on the quality of relief.
The differences with BeerTippingDude are interesting---Sam Rice and Merkle are good choices for teams like this.

I am trying to put together a team like this (if the draft will ever run.. :-)
as follows:

Catcher: Roseboro/Lake platoon
1B: Grimm and Leslie
2b: Scheondienst
3B: Riggs/McMullen platoon
SS: Bowa
LF: Alou/Fox platoon (Against lefties Devore moves to LF)
CF: Geronimo/kuntz
RF: Devore

In looking at your team, I think Rice may be a better choice than Devore, even with the added 1 mill cost.

The other key in these extreme small teams is, you HAVE to get AT LEAST two of the top 5 pitchers, IMO. Alexander, Brown, Camnitz, Koufax, Clemens; Cicotte, McLain, Scott to a lesser degree. Got to have the KILLER arms to shut down all the slugging teams your small ball guys are going to face. I think your lineup would work. But, I think S. Rice is one of the best small ball players in the game. Speed, durability, decent on base, good average. Defense isn't great, but good enough. Good luck.

Thanks dad  I loved that team. One of the biggest risks with that team was having 5!!! platoons. It worked out well though. Of course playing in Candlestick made my hitting even worse on top of having so many low priced players. I'll have to try it again some time, but the biggest thing I learned from this team was you HAVE to have defense on your pitching teams. I remember losing a few games to unearned runs. If I had gotten better defense I would have won another 5-10 games.

Good luck MtheB!!!

Well the draft ran, and here is what I got.

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/atg2/team/team_other.html?user_id=107724

Got the big dogs, the four best starters. and Fryman.
Didn't get Eckersely and Garber, that I wanted.

So, question. Given this is a Biermeister style team, who should I get for the pen--should I keep Newhouser/Humphreys or....?

Should I drop DeVore for Rice? Curtails my relief budget somewhat, but Rice would be a bit of an improvement.
