World Baseball Classic comes to Strat-O-Matic

World Baseball Classic comes to Strat-O-Matic

Next month, Major League Baseball will hold the second World Baseball Classic. Personally, I think this is pretty cool. It’s like MLB decided to run a short Strat-O-Matic league, with the players sorted into new teams (by nationality). So AeroDave10 and I were thinking, let’s do this in Strat online.

[b:fb7a132b46]TEAMS[/b:fb7a132b46]

We looked up the place of birth of each player in the Majors in 2008, and sorted them into 18 “teams.” Each team was about 53 players. Players born in the U.S. were sorted into 13 of the teams, Dominic Republic were split into two teams, and Venezuela, North America, and “World” each formed one team. (“World” players were players from other countries, such as Japan, Colombia, The Netherlands, etc.). We then decided that our Strat league would include 7 (of the 13) US teams, 2 Dominic Republic teams, and one team from Venezuela, North America, and World.

Thus, the twelve teams in this league will be:
1. Team Venezuela
2. Team North America (Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico)
3. Team Dominican Republic 1
4. Team Dominican Republic 2
5. Team World
6. Team USA 1
7. Team USA 2
8. Team USA 3
9. Team USA 4
10. Team USA 5
11. Team USA 6
12. Team USA 7

[b:fb7a132b46]DRAFTING YOUR TEAM[/b:fb7a132b46]

We will run a one-round live draft, based upon Pick-3 Lottery (highest Pick 3 goes first). When it is your turn, you will pick one of the available teams. However, once 7 USA teams have been chosen, NO MORE USA TEAMS CAN BE CHOSEN. Thus, we will definitely include the 5 international teams.

[b:fb7a132b46]DIVISIONS[/b:fb7a132b46]

The first 4 teams drafted will be in the East, the next 4 in the Central, and the final 4 in the West. Thus, if you get “stuck” with a low pick, at least you are in the division with the other managers with a low pick.

[b:fb7a132b46]LEAGUE SETTINGS[/b:fb7a132b46]

2008 season, $200m, DH, no waivers, 10% drop penalty, advanced.

[b:fb7a132b46]YOUR ROSTER[/b:fb7a132b46]

You have exclusive rights to all players listed on your team. Thus, with the $200m cap, you can drop and pick up your reserved players as much as you want. However, we will probably each have far less than 50 players, as some of the players on each team will not qualify for a Strat card.

[b:fb7a132b46]OTHER PLAYERS[/b:fb7a132b46]

No trading allowed. You may not pick up any free agent except those on your list of players. EXCEPTIONS:
[list:fb7a132b46][*:fb7a132b46]If your team does not have at least two catchers, you can pick up a $.50m catcher.
[*:fb7a132b46]If you don't have at least 5 starting pitchers, you can pick up a $.50m SP.
[*:fb7a132b46]If you don't have at least 4 pure relievers, you can pick up a $.50m pure reliever.
[*:fb7a132b46]If you don't have at least one player carded for another position, you can pick up one $.50m player who plays that position.
[/list:u:fb7a132b46]

[b:fb7a132b46]YOUR TEAM NAME[/b:fb7a132b46]

Your team name MUST BE exactly as shown above, except you can sub word(s) for "1" or "2" etc. For instance, Team World must be named "Team World," but Team USA 4 can be named something like "Team USA Bombers."

[b:fb7a132b46]HOW DO I JOIN? WHEN DO WE START?[/b:fb7a132b46]

If you want to play, you must do two things: sign up below, and send me an email. When you sign below, include a Pick-3 state. When you send me an email (to glennf@asmi.org), be sure to indicate that this is for the Strat WBC and indicate what your Strat name is. As soon as we get 12, we will start. Thus we will run the draft BEFORE the 2008 game is released, and be able to play our league as soon as the cards come out (when the real-life WBC is underway).

Wockenfuss,
Pick a new state. Splinter already took South Carolina.
