lack of pinch hitting substitutions

Postby franky35 » Sat Jan 03, 2009 10:46 am

Are there any tricks to get HAL to substitute a pinch hitter? I have Art Shamsky platooning vs. righties. There have been several games when I'm behind in the 9th, and HAL leaves in Shamsky to face a lefty reliever even though I have good pinch hitters (Hutton, Spezio) on the bench. Any suggestions?

And you have one of those guys listed as your preferred PH vs. Lefty's?

I had left my PHs blank. Now I put in Hutton as my lefty PH. I'll report if there is a difference.

No, even with Hutton assigned as my PH against lefties, HAL refuses to pinch hit for Shamsky.

Entering the 9th, down one run. Hutton on the bench. Here is the sad story:

SUBSTITUTE P - Joe Gibbon
SUBSTITUTE SS- Sonny Jackson
0 A.Shamsky 1 Pop Out (1B) b-0

Franky:

Even though the dice roll isn't indicated, the only popout (1b) readings that would occur on either Shamsky's card vs. LHP or on Gibbon's card vs. LHB is on dice rolls 4-8 and 4-9. These would have been outs even if a RHB was up, so if it's any consolation, it appears that HAL's screw up didn't make any difference to the outcome.

Gibbon's card shows a HOMERUN on dice roll 5-8 vs. LHB, plus other potential HOMERUN opportunities in column 5, which may be part of the reason why HAL left in the left handed Shamsky to face the left handed Gibbon.

Ken,

Compare Hutton vs. lefties and Shamsky vs. lefties. Of course it is always possible to find some dice roll where Shamsky would be better; but who would you put your money on? So far this season, Hutton is hitting 0.456 vs lefties (68/149) and Shamsky is batting 0.191 (4/21 all singles).

I know that with HAL, it is all about HRs. Even so, I had Spezio on the bench and he would be better for HRs. HAL just won't pinch hit for Shamsky and I don't know why that is.

Has anybody had HAL pinch hit for Shamsky? If so, how did you do it?
