Curt Gowdy--RIP

Postby LARRYLANG » Tue Feb 21, 2006 8:56 am

Who can forget the NBC game of the week with Curt Gowdy and Pee Wee Reese. Before the cable days and all the MLB channels etc. Curt Gowdy was THE voice of baseball TV. He will be missed, a true legend in broadcasting sports and my personal all-time favorite announcer.

Good call, Pelzer. A class-act that didn't need to rip performances or play up to personalities to tell the story of a game.

I always enjoyed his NFL work.

I enjoyed his calls of the AFL games in their heyday of Namath, Lamonica, Dawson, Kemp. I can't remember who his broacast partner was. I believe Charley Jones teamed up with Kyle Rote as one duo but does anyone remember Gowdy's partner back in the 60s (Note: I was very very young)

Gene you are right he was awesome with football also. I have a copy of the 69 super bowl on VHS and he does the play by Play. And you reminded me of his other stuff too. Remember the American Sportsman I believe it was called, where he hunted and fished with the celebs. Great show. Also if I remember right he called the very first super bowl in 65 I believe it was. I was in Jr. High school for the first one (Loved those Packers).

January '67. Gowdy called it for NBC and Ray Scott was on CBS.

Another big part of my youth is gone. Kurt Gowdy was all over the airwaves when I was in grade school/junior high: MLB's Game of the Week and the World Seiries, AFL (later AFC) football as NBC's A-Team announcer, the Final 4 (during much of UCLA's hallowed run), The American Sportsman, Golf, The Rose Bowl, and the Winter Olympics. About the only thing I can't recall him announcing was NHL Hockey. Nobody will dominate sports play-by-play like that again. I'm sure of it.
