Expensive Platoon

New Fenway park team - and I'm sitting post-waivers with a couple of strange dilemas on my hand.

I have Schmidt/Boggs as 3B. Boggs was my choice, Schmidt was awarded to me when I didn't get Brett in the autodraft.

I have Mattingly/Carew at 1B, both monsters at Fenway.

My OF consists of Butler in CF, Dawson in RF, Reggie in RF. Umm, no LF. :?

Unfortunately, you can only have one DH.

My trade attempts have been futile - nobody seems to want Schmidt. He's obviously a big chunk of change, but he's an all out masher. Am I crazy for starting the season with a Schmidt/Boggs platoon at 3B?

I have Sweet Lou at 2B and Tony Fernandez at SS. I figure I'll pick up a catcher later - right now it's Bando, which I'm ok with until I can free up some cash.

Any suggestions from the Fenway faithful?...

Fletch,

Have you tried trading Dawson and Carew or Dawson and Boggs as a package? I wish I was in your league, other than Dawson, I'd deal for any of the other guys. Sorry I can't help you out.

I'd dump Dawson for Hayes, Greenwell, Daniels, Matthews or Downing. I'd dump Carew as well and use Boggs as your DH.

Goodness -

The owners in your division have a vote too on your "strategy". 8-)

The last time I checked, division strategy looks a lot like Ying and Yang.

If your division is set with a balance LHSPs and LHRPs, Schmidt pays off. On the other hand, you know the answer to when there are a dearth of lefthanders on the mound.

Hayes, Greenwell, & Daniels are all taken :(

The other two don't do much for me. I don't think I could ever live with myself dropping Rodney Cline Carew at Fenway Park. He has a shot at a batting title playing there.

I'll need to look at dumping the Hawk for a mid-tier LF, but still not sure how to handle the 3B situation...

You simply have to trade or dump Boggs or Carew and use the other one as your DH. Anything else is a waste of cash no matter how good they are.

What LM Bombers says is absolutely true but do not drop Carew.

Fletch...you probably sent out a few fair trade offers and ran into the "this veteran is trying to screw me" thing. I'd probably send out a League-wide "(fill-in-the-blank) is for sale...looking for (fill-in-the-blank) in return" and see what happens.

If nobody was still interested, I'd start the season with all that lumber:

WORST CASE SCENARIO- 4 of your monsters are in their worst year. It's nice to be able to go to the bench for their replacements

BEST CASE SCENARIO- 4 of your monsters are in their best year. It sure would drive-up the price of a future trade in your favor at that point.

Oh yeah...could you teach me how to autodraft because...DAMN!! :D

Fletch -

If it doesn't work, you can always ask for a bailout from the TSN TARP funds.

I'm sure Bernie and company will allow you to dip in to the 90s free agent pool to make good on your 80s' bets.

Don't worry, be happy, and spend baby spend!
