COUNTING — With Rickey Henderson, Roberto Clemente and Jerry Grote out, the Counting Crows' pitching had to pick up the slack. Ace Mike Scott finished a stellar postseason throwing six no-hit innings in the deciding Game 5, picking up his third win in three starts and the Finals MVP.
"He's the ace of this staff and we wouldn't expect anything but a great game from him," said teammate Don Drysdale, who pitched a four-hit 4-0 shutout the day before.
LCS MVP (4 HR, 9 rbi) Henderson and Grote were lost for the rest of the postseason to injuries in the first game, while Clemente was also gone for the remainder after getting hurt in game 2.
"This team never rested on our laurels," said Jerry Zimmerman, who led the team with eight postseason RBI. "All we wanted to do was win."
In fairness, Addidas Streakers was also hit hard by injuries in the opening games, losing both Frank Chance and Honus Wagner.
Overall, the series was dominated by the pitching of both teams as they scored a total of 21 runs with only 60 hits in the five games. Streakers' Babe Adams out-dueled Steve Carlton in the second game 1-0, after Scott had thrown a 2-0 shutout against Mordecai Brown in Game 1.
