What happened to Nelson Cruz?

I'm the guy who drafted Michael Hoffpauir of CHI in hopes that he would appear, but expecting him to be excluded.... A strategy, that backfired.

I am pretty sure, those rules have been in effect since the Carlos Bearga debacle. Bernie just needs to put it in the rules page.

I agree with Ninersphan, just include all the cards and price them accordingly.

What was the "Carlos Bearga debacle?"

I'm not talking about Nelson, so I'm technically not posting again. :P

BUT

2003 set,
Baerga played for Arizona in that year's card set and had a real nice year as a Pinch hitter/Utility guy, qualified at 1b, 2b, & 3b had [b:0b21063cfd]207[/b:0b21063cfd] ab's, 225 pa's and [b:0b21063cfd]played in 105 games [/b:0b21063cfd]that year.

His card:

Counts RH hit 29.2/OB 31.2/TB 44.5/HR 0.8/BP 1/CL +8/DP 23
Counts LH HIT 37.2.OB 48.2/TB 44.5/HR 0.8/BP 0/ CL +7/DP 20

and he was [b:0b21063cfd]EXCLUDED[/b:0b21063cfd] by TSN

Which annoyed several of us, especailly yours truly who had drafted him in a pre-card draft and was counting on him as a starter. It was a mini uproar on the boards for a few days after the game launched, kinda like Mr. Cruz this year.

To this day, when some one is excluded I use the term Baerga-ed, as in:

"Jacoby Ellsbury got Baerga-ed in the 2007 set."

I started the thread and stayed away since. Just read most of the posts and in a sense I agree with everybody. But I'd still like to see guys like Cruz in the set, albeit with a high price.

Why? A few reasons. He made a real contribution to the Rangers last year. He is an interesting baseball story, a guy who for many years killed minor league pitching but failed in the majors. This (2008) could very likely have been his year. Also, we make up all kinds of games on TSN, some of which require a manager to pick a ML franchise from which players may be chosen. Leaving out Cruz (and guys like him) makes that kind of format less fun in a way. And lastly, although not a reason, in my mind I can't reconcile why Cruz would be out and Moises Alou with his 15 games played and 51 plate appearances is in. Yes, I know he has an injury on the 7 roll, but he's also only $1.1 mil. Just my $0.02.

It's the same principle every time. Prior to '08, Alou had put up four straight seasons of 900+ OPS. Even given that he's getting older, it's still perfectly reasonable to think he could have put up something like a 777 if he had stayed healthy. By the same standard, the judgment was made that Cruz would [i:7ccb7f464a]not[/i:7ccb7f464a] do anything close to what he did in '08 if he played every day. (Not that he won't be a productive major leaguer, but that he won't be the best non-Pujols hitter in baseball.) And, the judgment was made that Baerga wouldn't have hit anything like .343 with an 860 OPS if he had played every day... a judgment that was proven correct when he proceeded to hit .247 for the rest of his career, which ended 243 at-bats later.

Card set for the 2003 season, so 2004 for TSN
