over-rated disasters

[quote:b02876dc63="LMBombers"] A team can name anyone as their closer which means that he will get a closer rating in Strat. [/quote:b02876dc63]

Can someone elaborate on the "which means ..." part?

If a pitcher was a starter for most of his games that would mean that he will be rated as a starter in Strat. If a player played mostly in RF that means that he will be rated as a RF in Strat. If a pitcher was used in save situations that would mean he will be rated as a closer in Strat.

None of this means that these players will have good cards but they will have a rating at these positions.

Yes, I know -- but I thought the word "team" above refers to an SOM team: "A team can name anyone as their closer which means that he will get a closer rating in Strat." I guess he meant real MLB teams.

[quote:68cba87f85]Just because a pitcher has a closer rating does not insure that he will pitch well. [/quote:68cba87f85]
I think this was intended to disagree with my point, but it's actually exactly what I'm saying. The difference is, you seem accepting of it, and I'm not. The game is supposed to replicate real life, so Lidge [i:68cba87f85]should[/i:68cba87f85] be better than Mendoza, but the closer rating fails to achieve this.
There's a reason why K-Rod or Lidge may give up some hits and/or walks but still consistently close games successfully--they manage to get that final out when the tying runner is on base. That would be accurately reflected if Strat had a "clutch" factor for pitchers--but they don't.

In real life MLB games there are more pitchers that COULD close games,.. than do close games. Only in the last 20 years has the term closer meant anything. In the 1970s any number of good bullpen guys got save opportunities. But today's MLB baseball has collectively decided to streamline, and create the position of closer. One of the things I like about strat, is that you are able to try other guys out as closers. I think there is more made out of who gets the final three outs, then there need be.
