Fryman as set up
Tincup as closer
Maximize closer
Andersen - quick hook, not before 9th, 1-2 max
Murphy - quick hook, not before 8th, 1-2 max, avoid RH
Dayley - quick hook

This should keep Andersen out of games, get your 2nd best reliever as your closer, and get the most innings out of Fryman. If Dayley pitches too much and Tincup not enough, set Murphy and Dayley as closers maximized, Fryman as set up - Tincup should then be the long man.

Another slight variation of Treyomo's suggestion is to set Fryman as setup and closer (both lh & rh) but don't maximize the closer. I did this recently with Hernandez and got 174 IP, a 21-9 record with 28 saves in Fenway '67. HAL would often bring Hernandez in the 7th inning and he would close the game. He averaged almost 2.2 IP per appearance.

Tom -

When you did that, how were your other RPs set? I've tried that, but found my closer was consistently pulled for PH in the 8th, leaving lesser relievers to try to close out the game.

Trey,

You raised a good point that I had not considered. My league used the DH. It was a slugging team with cheap starters. Once HAL brought in Hernandez, there was no better relief pitcher. So, Hernandez would close out unless he reached his POW.

My other relievers were Giusti, Lamp, Worrell and Garman. The only other settings were Garman as the rh specialist (avoid left, quick hook and max 1/2 innings). Starters were all on quick hook, of course. Relief usage was aggressive.

Your idea will probably work better for Horntsnest. However, in a DH league, my method will definitely be effective.
