Question about clutch ratings

Question about clutch ratings

Postby Traylblazr » Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:06 pm

Had a question about picking up players that can hit in the clutch. I'm one of those old guys who played the table game a looooong time ago when the cards had a "clutch rating" for players, so be patient with this old timer who's a newbie again.

With the online game, if I understand it correctly, with the $ in front of the roll result, it results to an out if the roll result has an on-base result (single, double, etc.) and a hit if the printed roll result was an out, all with runners in scoring position and two outs.

Sounds to me like I need to find players that don't have a bunch of dollar signs in front of SINGLE, DOUBLE, HOMERUN, etc on their cards and more of the ones with the dollar signs in front of the outs. Is this correct or am I wrong?

Right now I'm tearing my hair out over my team losing way too many low scoring one or two run games and leaving a lot of guys on base every game.

Any advisement is appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you have it about right. There is a lot of debate how often the $ actually comes into play. From playing FTF, it seems to me that it happens about every three games or so.

One clarification, the $ will only happen on singles, never an extra base hit. Oh one other thing, it turns into a Single** or a popout.

Also, if you don't know, SOM provides a disk (for a charge) that will give you the count of the most important data on the cards (including clutch) and, if I may, there are people (including me) that do ratings for the players and will provide lots of information on evaluating players. Some of the best info available is doing exactly what you just did. There are lots of players who will give you opinions on players. (Not that they always agree! ;))

An interesting tidbit on the clutch though, is that while SOM has never produced cards that have $ on anything but an out or single, if you have the CDROM game and the ability to edit/create your own cards, you can put a $ rating next to anything for some interesting results.

For example, if you put:
$SI* 1-7, lo(ss) 8-20
If that roll comes up in a clutch situation, it reverses it to:
PO(ss) 1-7, SI** 8-20

Likewise, if you have
$Homerun in a clutch situation it changes it to either a double or single, I forget.

You could also put clutch symbols on a pitchers card if you want. It even has an effect on walk, x-roll, and ballpark homerun/single results.

I don't remember exactly how it changed the results, it was a while ago when I experimented, but I had found it interesting.

That is very interesting. I think there is some type of "clutch" for the pitchers in the TSN game, but I've never gotten an explanation of what that actually means.
