The Bullpen Roles interface is now available [b:e4ab0bf9ae]for testing purposes only - it does not affect your league's games[/b:e4ab0bf9ae].

See my new blog post for details. [i:e4ab0bf9ae]Please read it carefully.[/i:e4ab0bf9ae]

I'm shooting to make it available for [i:e4ab0bf9ae]new leagues[/i:e4ab0bf9ae] some time on Friday.

Great stuff, Bernie.

At one point, you said that the new bullpen would include [b:ee51d7ccd8]explanations[/b:ee51d7ccd8] for the settings. For instance, [i:ee51d7ccd8]what is[/i:ee51d7ccd8] quick hook, righty specialist, mop up, etc. A sentence or so for each setting would be very helpful IMO.

Yes. Setup vs. L/R per se doesn't really have a real-world equivalent, and it wasn't implemented effectively in the code, basically making it (mostly) replaceable with the advent of LH/RH Specialists. Closer vs. L/R was preserved because the Closer Rule is a specific situation requiring only certain pitchers to be used.

There's two "help" links at the top of the new checkbox table, which take you to this:

Yes. I'd really like to know exactly what mop-up means, and how I can get it so that I can set a cheap guy to ONLY come in and pitch 3 or 4 innings when it's 10-2 in the 3rd.

However, I guess mop-up guys might be irrelevant if I set my starters to "not relieve before" a certain inning. Theoretically, if they only tire out after 6 or 7 innings before getting a 3 or 4 day break, they should always be able to throw the number of innings on their card without tiring, right?

For example, if I have Jake Westbrook (S6) set to not be relieved for before the 7th inning, he should pitch at least 6 fatigue-free innings and get the ball to my bullpen every time, regardless if he's given up 1 run or 10 runs. Then if he goes beyond 6 innings, I risk him pitching fatigued. After he comes out, he rests for 4 games before starting again, when he is 100% fresh.

I guess what I'm getting at is that if you set the "don't relieve before" setting to the number of innings to which a pitcher is carded, the classic, cheap mop-up R2 or R3 guy (e.g. Vinnie Chulk) would only really come in if the game went into extra innings or the rest of the bullpen was just totally gassed out. After all, as long as Westbrook isn't fatigued, I'd rather have him in there than Chulk. Wouldn't you all agree?

Does this sound right??

Sorry I wish that were true but a pitcher can get tried for a number of reason before that.

Indicates the reading is changed to SINGLE** if the pitcher is fatigued. A starting pitcher becomes fatigued when 1) the game has reached the pitcher's endurance number in innings, and he gives up either 3 hits and/or unintentional walks in the same inning, or 4 hits and/or unintentional walks over 2 consecutive innings, or 2) he gives up 5 runs in any one inning, 6 runs over 2 consecutive innings, or 7 runs over 3 straight innings.

Thanks. I never knew that. That does sound more realistic.

ggrover,
This is how pitchers get tired in this online game (from the "help" click on the Pitcher Preference page):

[quote:3c08d72cc6][b:3c08d72cc6]Pitch Count Fatigue[/b:3c08d72cc6]
Pitch Count Fatigue is a special system found only in SOM Online and the CD-ROM game that is a replacement for the board game's Super-Advanced Point of Weakness (POW) rules. It improves upon the all-or-nothing fatigue state of pitchers in the POW system by more realistically and gradually tiring pitchers as they throw more pitches and give up baserunners in a game.

In the Strat-O-Matic Online game, PCF is in effect for all leagues, and has been since the game's inception.

[b:3c08d72cc6]Suggested Pitch Count[/b:3c08d72cc6]
A Suggested Pitch Count is determined for each pitcher at the start of each game. This represents the approximate number of pitches he may throw before his condition starts to deteriorate.

It is possible that a pitcher may have his Condition altered well before or well after the suggested number of pitches for him. For instance, if he gets his doors blown off early in the game he might have his Condition affected earlier. Conversely, if he is pitching a gem he might be able to go many more pitches before his Condition deteriorates.

[b:3c08d72cc6]Pitcher's Condition (F0 - F9)[/b:3c08d72cc6]
The pitcher's Condition can be from F0 to F9. F9 means that he is operating on all cylinders, whereas F0 indicates that he has nothing left in the tank. Normally pitchers start their appearance as F9 and maintain that level until they approach or exceed their Suggested Pitch Count.

If a pitcher's Condition drops to F0 he will continue to fatigue the longer he stays in the game. His Condition rating will remain displayed as F0, but he will start to give up hits and walks at a higher rate if you leave him in the game.

The situations wherein a pitcher can reach his Point of Weakness (POW) as per the Super-Advanced POW rules do still apply, but in these cases he is not to be considered suddenly "tired", nor do all "@" readings automatically turn into SINGLE**. But this DOES significantly speed up the pitcher's Pitch Count Fatigue deterioration.

Otherwise, in general, if the pitcher hasn't reached his POW per the Super-Advanced POW rules, he will gradually start losing points in his Condition (e.g. F8 -> F7) as he throws more pitches, once he has exceeded his Suggested Pitch Count for the game. However, if he has been pitching particularly well in his most recent innings, this rate of deterioration will be slower. [/quote:3c08d72cc6]
