2008 auction league, FULL!!!

Postby gorshar » Thu Aug 27, 2009 4:12 am

League:
Auction League, 2008 set, DH. No trades, no FAs. Your 25 is your 25. $200 mill salary cap, $80 mill to spend. Unique ballparks.

We've done this with ATG and it went very well, the auction part takes about six months and as all previous participants (five of them here) will confirm, it's not a drag at all, but big fun.

We start with three hitters and two pitchers - if nobody objects perhaps the five of us from the ATG auction leagues will each make the first player nominations. Bidding starts at a minimum of 10% of the player's value and can be increased in increments of $100K. Any time 24 hours passes without a bid on a player, that player is awarded to the last person that placed a bid and that person makes the next nomination. You have $80 million to bid though the actual total salary of all players on your team is $200 mill, which is effectively no cap. Ballparks must also be bid on and can be nominated at any time when a pitcher is due for a nomination.

If you're interested to see how it works, this is our present ATG auction thread: http://forums.sportingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=562775

And this is the previous one: http://forums.sportingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=505515 which you can see took five months to complete.

Yes, as Gorshar said, this is a great format. It's basically 6 months of fun for 25 bucks. I usually have 3 or 4 teams going at once, but the auction league is always the one I check first. Hopefully we can get this filled and get it started! If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask any of the 5 that have already done this. So hurry in and join in the fun!!

salary cap rule:[quote:28551363d7]You have $80 million to bid though the actual total salary of all players on your team is $200 mill, which is effectively no cap[/quote:28551363d7]

I am not sure I understand this part. But I am guessing since players will have two prices, one set by the auction, and one already set by TSN, different salary caps are needed.

Also, do we bid on every single player, or just until all 12 teams have 25 players? I also do not really understand how the order of the players we bid on are chosen. And will we have a chance to bid on every player in the set that we may be interested in?

This sounds like some serious fun, but I am not sure I understand all the rules. Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Basically correct. For example, let's say we're bidding on Johan Santana whose salary is set at $6 mill by TSN. The first bid is $600K (10% of the total salary). Subsequent bids are placed by different managers raising the price accordingly. Finally the bidding reaches $4.7 mil when 24 hours passes without a bid. The manager who last bid wins Santana and deducts $4.7 mil from their total cap of $80 and deducts $6 mil from $200. For all intents and purposes there is no TSN salary cap as no one will get near $200 mil. So the only salary cap is the one we impose upon ourselves with our bids. It makes for some very interesting strategies as the auction progresses.

[quote:c45269c1d2]Also, do we bid on every single player, or just until all 12 teams have 25 players? [/quote:c45269c1d2] We bid until our rosters are full (12 x 25).

[quote:c45269c1d2]I also do not really understand how the order of the players we bid on are chosen.[/quote:c45269c1d2] At any given time there are 3 hitters and 2 pitchers on auction. The initial five will be chosen by the first five managers on the list - we will each choose one. Thereafter subsequent players are nominated by each winning manager. So in the previous example, the manager who won Santana would nominate another pitcher. If the example was Hanley Ramirez than the winning manager would nominate another hitter.

[quote:c45269c1d2]And will we have a chance to bid on every player in the set that we may be interested in?[/quote:c45269c1d2] So long as it's not more than 25 players, yes, because you will get to make 25 nominations during the auction.
