The secret to success

Postby ClowntimeIsOver » Thu Sep 17, 2009 1:46 am

"What are the odds of flipping a coin twice and having it come up heads twice in a row, IF THE FIRST TOSS IS HEADS?"

ugrant sez: "50% So that's twice as good! But what do coins have to do with dice?"

This guy either a) said something stupid, realized it, and kept saying stupid things anyway, or b) deliberately said something he knew wasn't true, just to fu$$ with people (and then to say "you're slinging mud!" when he got responses ... so allow me:)

in either case, he's a [noun] (look it up .... it's a few pages from "tautology," you [noun])

edit: "[noun]" originally read something else, so looking it up won't work

wachovia - takes a brave man to hide behind [noun]. Why not just tell us how you really feel?

For the record, I never posted anything about odds regarding coin flips.

I will claim credit that my response to your coin flip post got under your skin. {grin}

So after your courageous last post, feel better?

Heh, this thread is the Energizer Bunny reincarnated!! I'd be interested to hear from the original author of this thread, whose been absent from this discussion almost from the get go. Just curious to see if he understands the logic of statistics, or if he continues to think there is a statiscal edge to his strategy.

Looks like I'm gonna lose my bet that this thread will hit 100.

here we go! 95!

Really, from my previous post. This is the exact scenario we are talking about:

http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/Knocking-Me-Off-The-Perch.aspx

But with two outcomes (red/black) instead of 6. And here's how you can test your luck:

But, that being said, I hate guys with HRs at 3-2, 3-3 etc. Those guys always suck, so never draft them!

I never thought this post would live this long when I started it a few weeks ago. It has been interesting thinking through the different perspectives and logic. Let me add a twist.... Does anyone know exactly how the HAL dice rolling machine works? If the white dice rolls on a 1 column where does it start for the next roll? How does HAL shake the dice? Has anyone ever looked at a series of games to determine how random or un-random the rolls were to determine if there is any benefit to column sequencing?
